These 30 plane movies range from airborne thrillers and survival dramas to broad comedy and airport stories. “Plane movie” is a flexible category here: some films unfold largely aboard an aircraft, while others make a flight, a pilot, or an airport central to the story. Use the mood and setting notes to find a suspenseful watch, a movie that will make you laugh, or a more reflective pick.

The list is curated, not a measured ranking: there is no single authoritative answer to which airplane movies are “best,” and the order does not claim to be a scorecard. The selection follows the broad flights-and-air-travel framing used by Travel + Leisure, whose article was updated October 20, 2025.

How to choose a plane movie

Start with tone, then check how central aviation is to the story. A tense cabin thriller and a comedy set in flight may share the airplane setting but make for very different evenings; an airport-centered drama belongs in a broad travel-movie list even if most of its scenes are not aboard a plane.

  • For comedy: Airplane! is the classic broad farce in this selection; View from the Top offers a lighter, career-focused take on airline life.
  • For airborne suspense: Flightplan and United 93 are among the more intense choices.
  • For survival and disaster: Look to films such as Alive for stories driven by extreme peril. The source list describes it as based on real events.
  • For airport and travel drama: The Terminal is largely airport-based rather than an in-flight story.

Intensity labels are viewing guidance, not formal ratings. The list spans fictional plots, historical subjects, and films presented as based on real events.

30 plane movies to add to your watchlist

The selections below follow the broad “movies that involve flights or air travel” approach. They are not ranked by a scoring system or claimed to represent a universal consensus.

  1. Airplane! (1980)

Mood: absurdist comedy. Aviation centrality: most of the story is aboard a flight. Ted Striker boards Elaine’s flight, and an airborne emergency sets off the farce. For a concise introduction to the plot, see the AFI Catalog entry. The BFI film record identifies it as a 1980 U.S. film written and directed by Jim Abrahams, David Zucker, and Jerry Zucker, with Robert Hays, Julie Hagerty, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar among its cast. AFI lists an 88-minute duration; BFI lists 87 minutes.

Its jokes include the exchange, “Surely, you can’t be serious.” “I am serious … and don’t call me Shirley,” spoken by Ted Striker and Dr. Rumack. The setup is comic invention, not a guide to aviation procedure.

  2. Flightplan

Mood: airborne suspense. Aviation centrality: the flight is central. A natural pick when you want a confined setting and a tense mystery.

  3. United 93

Mood: intense, historically grounded suspense. Aviation centrality: the flight is central. Choose it for a serious treatment of a real aviation tragedy, not light entertainment.

  4. View from the Top

Mood: comedy. Aviation centrality: airline work and travel shape the story. A lighter option when you want an aviation-themed movie without a disaster or hijacking premise.

  5. The Terminal

Mood: airport drama with comic elements. Aviation centrality: airport-centered. Its place on a plane-movie list reflects the travel setting, not a story spent mainly in a cabin.

  6. Alive

Mood: survival drama. Aviation centrality: a crash and its aftermath drive the story. The source list presents the film as based on real events, making it a more harrowing choice than a conventional travel comedy.

  7. Amelia

Mood: biographical drama. Aviation centrality: the life and flying career of aviator Amelia Earhart are the focus. Choose it for a real-aviator story rather than cabin suspense.

  8. Air Force One

Mood: action thriller. Aviation centrality: an aircraft is the principal setting. A choice for high-stakes action rather than aviation realism.

  9. Airport

Mood: ensemble disaster drama. Aviation centrality: airport operations and a flight-related crisis share the story. It suits viewers who like multiple plotlines converging around air travel.

  10. Airport 1975

Mood: disaster thriller. Aviation centrality: the in-flight emergency is central. Best suited to a classic disaster-movie mood.

  11. Airport ’77

Mood: disaster adventure. Aviation centrality: an aircraft crisis drives the plot. It is a heightened genre pick, not a documentary account.

  12. The Aviator

Mood: historical biographical drama. Aviation centrality: aviation is a major part of the story. A fit for viewers more interested in the people and history behind flying than in a single flight emergency.

  13. Air America

Mood: action comedy. Aviation centrality: pilots and air operations are central. Choose it for an adventure with a lighter touch.

  14. Con Air

Mood: action thriller. Aviation centrality: the aircraft is the main setting. Its premise favors action spectacle over realistic flight operations.

  15. Executive Decision

Mood: action and suspense. Aviation centrality: an aircraft crisis anchors the plot. A strong fit for a high-pressure, mission-driven watch.

  16. Flight

Mood: drama. Aviation centrality: a flight incident acts as the story’s catalyst. Lists disagree about whether it belongs among the great aviation movies, a reminder that “plane movie” depends partly on what the viewer values.

  17. Flight of the Phoenix

Mood: survival adventure. Aviation centrality: a crash and the effort to survive shape the story. The title appears in an aviation-movie roundup aimed at pilots, illustrating the genre’s range beyond passenger-flight thrillers.

  18. The Flight of the Phoenix

Mood: survival adventure. Aviation centrality: aviation is central to the survival premise. The National Air and Space Museum’s personal list includes the title, though its list uses its own scope and exclusions.

  23. Pushing Tin

Mood: comedy-drama. Aviation centrality: air traffic control and airport life, rather than a passenger cabin, drive the story.

  24. Red Eye

Mood: suspense thriller. Aviation centrality: a commercial flight supplies the confined setting for the central threat. A compact option for tense, close-quarters suspense.

  25. Sully

Mood: reflective aviation drama. Aviation centrality: a real emergency landing and its aftermath anchor the story. It is a more measured choice than a conventional action thriller.

  26. The Right Stuff

Mood: historical drama. Aviation centrality: aviation and the early U.S. space program are central. The AOPA pilot-community roundup includes it among its aviation-film choices.

  27. Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines

Mood: period comedy-adventure. Aviation centrality: early flight is the premise. A lighter historical option for viewers who want aviation before the modern passenger jet.

  28. Twelve O’Clock High

Mood: serious war drama. Aviation centrality: military air operations are central. AOPA’s roundup includes it among titles favored by aviation-minded readers.

  29. Dr. Strangelove

Mood: dark political satire. Aviation centrality: a bomber mission is a major plot hinge, though this is not primarily a passenger-plane story. AOPA’s list includes it, showing how broad aviation-film selections can be.

  30. Battle of Britain

Mood: historical war film. Aviation centrality: aerial combat is central. Choose it for a large-scale military aviation story.

Why different “best plane movies” lists disagree

There is no single authoritative ranking in the available sources. Travel + Leisure’s list ranges from critical favorites to entertaining B-movies; AOPA’s pilot readership highlights titles such as Twelve O’Clock High, The Spirit of St. Louis, Battle of Britain, Dr. Strangelove, The Flight of the Phoenix, and The Right Stuff. The National Air and Space Museum describes its own movie list as personal and idiosyncratic and notes that it excludes some kinds of films. Their different choices reflect audience and scope, not a settled verdict about quality.

That is why a useful watchlist distinguishes an airplane’s role from a film’s tone. A movie can qualify because it is set aboard a flight, centers on aviation history, follows pilots or airport workers, or uses air travel as a turning point. The best pick is the one that matches the kind of story you want tonight.
