Beerus and Broly complete this evidence-backed ranking, each for a different kind of spectacle. These are editorial picks, not an official ranking or a result of audience polling.
How this ranking works
Each fight is weighed by its visual spectacle and choreography, how much the opponent forces Goku to adapt, the emotional or character stakes, and the resolution’s consequences for the story. Official franchise summaries provide substantial detail for these three matchups. Toei’s Dragon Ball Super episode index also identifies episodes titled around Goku versus Hit and Goku versus Black, but titles alone do not provide enough detail to compare those fights responsibly here.
1. Goku vs. Jiren — Dragon Ball Super
This is the strongest choice for a ranking built around escalation and consequences. Goku’s breakthroughs into Ultra Instinct shift the balance against Jiren, and the battle ultimately moves beyond a simple one-on-one contest: Goku and Vegeta attack together, while the final sequence involves Frieza tackling Jiren and both Frieza and Goku being eliminated.
That resolution gives the fight its distinctive weight. Goku does not simply win by overpowering his opponent; the ending makes the result a collective effort and a costly one. Ultra Instinct supplies the visual and tactical escalation, while the joint elimination sequence turns the finish into a consequential story beat.
#1 Best Overall
2. Goku vs. Beerus — Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods
Goku’s duel with Beerus stands out because its scale is matched by a clear outcome: Goku loses. The official film synopsis describes Goku transforming into Super Saiyan God with help from the others before beginning an earth-shaking battle with Beerus.
That combination makes the fight more than a showcase for a new transformation. Goku receives support to reach a form capable of facing Beerus, yet the duel still ends in defeat. Its place here rests on the contrast between the spectacle of the confrontation and the fact that Goku cannot claim victory.
Rank #2
3. Goku vs. Broly — Dragon Ball Super: Broly
Broly’s fight with Goku is compelling for its escalation. The official character feature describes Broly overwhelming Vegeta, then reaching his limit against Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan Goku, before Broly’s power grows further. The movie’s account also goes on to describe Broly fighting Gogeta, placing Goku’s clash within a larger confrontation.
Broly’s increasing power makes this a different kind of challenge from Beerus or Jiren: the central tension is whether Goku can keep pace as his opponent grows stronger. The progression earns the film a place among Goku’s most striking movie fights, even though the official account does not frame the encounter as a straightforward Goku victory.

Why Goku vs. Hit and Goku vs. Black are not ranked here
Toei’s Dragon Ball Super episode index includes titles explicitly naming Goku versus Hit and Goku versus Black. Those titles establish the matchups, but they do not describe the fights’ tactics, choreography, stakes, or outcomes. Without those details, assigning either a defensible place alongside the three fights above would imply a comparison this account cannot support.
Where these fights fit in the franchise
Toei’s catalog covers a much wider screen history than this ranking: Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball GT, Dragon Ball Z Kai, Dragon Ball Super, Dragon Ball DAIMA, and multiple films. The three entries here are not a claim that other Goku fights are lesser; they are the matchups for which the available official descriptions provide enough fight-specific detail to explain a ranking. Release chronology places Battle of Gods in 2013, Dragon Ball Super’s broadcast in 2015, Dragon Ball Super: Broly in 2018, Super Hero in 2022, and DAIMA in 2024.
