This retrospective guide highlights North American theatrical releases from 2025 that offered a strong reason to leave the couch, from large-format spectacle to intimate, filmmaker-led stories. It is a curated selection, not a ranking: release schedules establish when and how films were planned to open, not which ones are objectively best.

How to use this 2025 theatrical guide

The selections below are organized by release window and combine studio releases with original and independent films. Dates refer to North American theatrical openings or the stated initial engagement; a limited opening is not the same as a nationwide release. Release calendars also distinguish wide, limited, and special-engagement bookings, while seasonal movie guides may include streaming titles. Check local listings for current availability and the exact format playing near you.

Large-screen appeal is specific to each film. Some titles were identified by IMAX as filmed for IMAX, and Disney said Tron: Ares included action sequences specially shot for IMAX. Those designations do not guarantee an IMAX booking in every market. The IMAX schedule was an advance slate: its SEC filing said dates could change, vary by territory, and omit limited premiere dates. It expected at least 12 “Filmed for IMAX” titles in 2025; that was a forecast, not a confirmed final count. IMAX’s filing

Spring and early summer: scale, spectacle, and a superhero team-up

Thunderbolts* — May 2

Marvel’s unconventional team-up offered a less polished, more prickly alternative to a conventional superhero ensemble. Director Jake Schreier described its characters to the Associated Press as “a group of misfit toys” who have been thrown away and must work together to escape their predicament. The film was among IMAX’s 2025 “Filmed for IMAX” selections, making it a reasonable pick for viewers who want its action and ensemble dynamics on a large screen.

  • Runtime: 155 minutes

Lilo & Stitch — May 23

Disney’s live-action reworking of its animated story paired a familiar family-and-alien adventure with the visual scale of a theatrical release. Disney announced on October 3, 2025, that the film had become the first movie released that year to cross $1 billion in worldwide box office. That is a dated studio-reported milestone, not a quality ranking or a current annual box-office comparison. Disney’s October 3 announcement

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning — May 23

For viewers drawn to practical-looking action and elaborate set pieces, this chapter in the long-running series was a natural big-screen choice. IMAX listed it as “Filmed for IMAX.” That supports seeking out a suitable large-format screening where offered, though local format availability depends on the theater.

Materialists — June 13

Celine Song’s contemporary romantic drama brought a quieter, character-centered option to the summer slate. Its appeal is less about spectacle than the chance to watch a new film by the director of Past Lives with an audience, before the crowded summer calendar moved on.

How to Train Your Dragon — June 13

The live-action version of the animated fantasy put dragons, flight, and sweeping landscapes at the center of its theatrical pitch. It suited viewers looking for family-friendly visual adventure rather than another superhero story.

28 Years Later — June 20

Director Danny Boyle returned to the post-apocalyptic world of 28 Days Later for a new chapter. The film’s eerie scale and atmosphere made theatrical viewing a good match for horror fans who prefer dread shared in a dark room.

F1 — June 27

Joseph Kosinski’s racing drama was built around speed, cockpit perspective, and the sensation of competition. Its subject and action made a large screen especially apt; the appeal is immediate even for viewers who do not follow the sport closely.

High summer: dinosaurs, superheroes, and original stories

Jurassic World Rebirth — July 2

The latest dinosaur adventure offered creature effects and large-scale peril, the sort of material that benefits from a theater’s screen and sound system. It was one of the season’s franchise-led options for viewers seeking spectacle.

Superman — July 11

James Gunn’s new take on the DC hero gave audiences a fresh entry point into a familiar character. The film offered superhero action and a chance to see a new cinematic direction with an opening-weekend crowd.

Sorry, Baby — June 27

Eva Victor’s independent drama was a counterweight to the season’s effects-driven releases. For viewers who want a smaller, more intimate film alongside the blockbusters, it was a notable theatrical choice. Its limited-scale storytelling is precisely the point: the case for seeing it in a theater is attention and shared focus, not spectacle.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps — July 25

Marvel’s introduction of its first family of superheroes brought retro-futurist design and ensemble adventure to the summer lineup. It gave franchise fans another large-scale option, while its distinct team dynamic separated it from solo-hero stories.

Fall and the holiday season: independent drama and late-year spectacle

Blue Moon — October 17 limited opening; nationwide expansion October 24

Richard Linklater’s film about songwriter Lorenz Hart had a staggered release rather than one simultaneous nationwide opening. Sony Pictures Classics announced an initial opening in Los Angeles and New York on October 17, followed by a nationwide expansion on October 24. Check the date relevant to your city rather than treating the first engagement as a universal opening. Sony Pictures Classics’ release announcement

Bugonia — October 24

Yorgos Lanthimos’s offbeat science-fiction comedy offered a deliberately strange alternative to the season’s franchise films. Viewers who enjoy distinctive auteur filmmaking had a clear reason to make room for it theatrically.

Hamnet — November 26

Chloé Zhao’s adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s novel brought a literary, emotionally focused drama to the holiday corridor. It was a fit for viewers seeking a more contemplative film amid the season’s louder releases.

Tron: Ares — October 10

The latest Tron film returned to a world defined by digital environments, glowing design, and electronic imagery. Disney said some action sequences were specially shot for IMAX, while IMAX also listed the title among its “Filmed for IMAX” slate. Look for the format locally if that presentation is part of the draw. Disney’s announcement about IMAX sequences

Zootopia 2 — November 26

Walt Disney Animation’s sequel returned to the animal-populated city of the original, making it a strong family outing for viewers who wanted comedy and animated world-building on a theater screen. Disney framed it as a holiday-season return to that setting; that is the studio’s promotional description, not an independent assessment.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 — December 5

The horror sequel offered a late-year option for audiences who enjoy theatrical jump scares and watching a genre film with a crowd.

Avatar: Fire and Ash — December 19

James Cameron’s return to Pandora was one of the year’s clearest cases for a large screen: expansive environments, elaborate effects, and an immersive science-fiction world are central to the series’ appeal. Disney said the previous film, Avatar: The Way of Water, grossed $2.3 billion during its first theatrical run. That is the studio’s historical figure for that film, not a forecast or a direct measure of the new movie. Disney’s statement on Avatar: The Way of Water

The Testament of Ann Lee — December 25

For a less conventional holiday release, Mona Fastvold’s historical musical drama was slated by Disney for a 70mm theatrical presentation on December 25, 2025. That format can be a distinctive reason to seek a screening, but the announced presentation does not establish that every theater or region booked it. Disney’s 2025 theatrical slate announcement

Choosing what to see in a theater

  • For large-format spectacle: Prioritize titles with documented large-format plans, such as Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Tron: Ares, or Avatar: Fire and Ash, then confirm the format at your local cinema.
  • For a less franchise-heavy lineup: Consider Materialists, Sorry, Baby, Blue Moon, Bugonia, or Hamnet, depending on whether you want romance, intimate drama, comedy, or a literary adaptation.
  • For families: The year’s options included Lilo & Stitch, How to Train Your Dragon, and Zootopia 2; check local ratings and showtimes for your group.
  • For a specific release date: Distinguish a limited first engagement from a later expansion, and check local listings rather than relying on an advance schedule.

Sources and release-date context

The selections draw on Associated Press seasonal guides for editorial context, The Numbers’ North American release calendar for distinctions among wide, limited, and special-engagement releases, IMAX’s advance schedule for format designations, and official studio announcements for slate details. An advance slate can change, and a North American release date does not establish a film’s date elsewhere. For local showtimes and format availability, consult the theater or ticketing service serving your area.
