There is no official Marvel top-twenty ranking of symbiotes. This is an editorial list, not a canon power scale: it weighs demonstrated combat outcomes, durability and recovery, breadth of abilities, influence, and how comparable the evidence is. It also separates an individual symbiote from its host and from temporary amplified forms.
The available official Marvel material firmly supports only a few comparisons. In particular, Marvel says Toxin was “much, much stronger” than Venom and Carnage in one early encounter—but Toxin had help from Spider-Man in defeating them. That is meaningful evidence about that story, not proof that every version of Toxin always outranks every version of Venom or Carnage.
How this ranking treats symbiote strength
“Strongest” can mean different things: winning a direct fight, surviving severe damage, having a wide range of powers, or influencing events on a cosmic scale. This ranking would weigh all of those, but the official sources available here do not establish a standardized scoring system or enough comparable feats to responsibly assign twenty places.
- Symbiote versus host: A bonded character’s abilities and actions reflect the partnership, not always the symbiote alone.
- Baseline versus temporary form: A major transformation or power-up should be named rather than treated as the character’s ordinary state.
- Comparable evidence: A direct matchup is more useful for ranking than a broad claim of power, but its circumstances still matter.
- Knull’s category: Knull is a creator/deity figure in symbiote mythology, not an ordinary bonded symbiote. Including him requires broadening the category beyond individual symbiotes.
The strongest source-backed comparisons
Toxin: a notable matchup, not a universal verdict
Marvel’s official Toxin guide describes Toxin as Carnage’s offspring and recounts an early confrontation with Venom and Carnage. It says Toxin was much stronger in that encounter and defeated both with some help from Spider-Man. That supports Toxin’s high placement in discussions of combat potential, while the assistance and story-specific context prevent it from settling every possible matchup.

The guide also discusses later Toxin stories, including the King in Black period and subsequent conflict with Carnage. Those changing circumstances make a single unqualified label—“Toxin”—less precise than identifying the incarnation and period being discussed.
Carnage: the form and period matter
Marvel’s Carnage profile recounts a long sequence of developments in the bond between Carnage and Cletus Kasady. It describes Kasady’s connection to a primordial Grendel symbiote, the Dark Carnage form, and the accumulation of codices. Those are materially different states; ranking “Carnage” without specifying the period can blur ordinary appearances with an amplified form.

Grendel and Knull: a different scale of comparison
Marvel’s Carnage material links Grendel and Knull to events preceding Dark Carnage and Knull’s release. Marvel’s Venom reading list places Knull’s campaign within a major Venom storyline. Knull belongs in a broad discussion of symbiote power because of his role in that mythology, but he is a creator/deity figure rather than a routine bonded opponent. The available material does not establish a clean, like-for-like power comparison between him and ordinary symbiotes.
Venom: lineage and limited comparative evidence
Marvel’s Toxin guide places Venom at the start of the family lineage discussed, with Carnage and later descendants. Its Toxin comparison offers one useful point of reference, but the official material cited here does not provide a dedicated Venom profile or a full set of comparable feats sufficient to establish a defensible exact rank for Venom.

Why a complete numbered top twenty would overstate the evidence
A twenty-place ranking implies that each entry has been compared against the others on a reasonably consistent basis. The official sources cited here establish character histories and selected events, not a complete roster, a current baseline for every incarnation, or a standardized measure of power. Filling the remaining positions would require claims about characters and feats not established by these sources.
For a useful comparison, start with a specific version and story: identify the host, whether the symbiote is in a temporary empowered state, the opponent, and the circumstances of the fight. Then distinguish an observed outcome from a general claim that one character is always stronger. By that standard, Toxin’s early fight is a strong but bounded comparison; Dark Carnage and Knull require explicit notes about form and category.

What to read for the clearest context
Marvel’s Toxin guide and Carnage profile provide the relevant lineage and transformation context, while the Venom reading list points to the larger storyline involving Knull. Reading those materials alongside the stories they describe is more informative than treating a single ranked list as definitive.
