These 20 looks trace how Coachella style grew from boho staples and practical festival clothes into a mix of celebrity street style, high-fashion attendee outfits and theatrical stagewear. This is an editorial selection, not an authoritative ranking: each look is included for its recognizability, dated documentation, influence on the festival’s visual vocabulary or contribution to a range of years and contexts. Attendee, party and performer looks are identified separately because they are not interchangeable evidence.
How Coachella style changed
The festival’s familiar style vocabulary includes prairie dresses, flower crowns and cowboy boots, as well as denim, fringe, plaids, boots and macramé. Vogue describes the early 2010s as an inflection point, when Coachella became a star-studded street-style event. Its coverage from later years shows a broader range of personal styling rather than one fixed uniform. Vogue’s retrospective of recurring Coachella trends and its 2026 style commentary offer context for that evolution.
The selection below moves chronologically. Captions and archive features support the outfit descriptions; the choice and order of the 20 are editorial.
2010: The emerging festival uniform, with room to sparkle
1. Ophelia Lovibond’s daisy romper and coral headscarf
Context: Attendee, 2010. Signature: A brown-belted daisy-print romper and coral scarf knotted around her head. Vogue described the look as part of the festival uniform taking shape that year: playful, easy to wear and unmistakably bohemian. Vogue’s 2010 feature documents the outfit.

2. Alexa Chung’s playsuit, espadrilles and army shirt
Context: Attendee, 2010. Signature: A playsuit grounded by espadrilles and an army shirt. The mix of a light one-piece with a utilitarian layer captures the contrast between festival ease and borrowed-from-the-wardrobe practicality. British Vogue’s archive gallery records the look.
3. Florence Welch’s hippie fabrics, lamé and sparkle shoes
Context: Festival look, 2010. Signature: Hippie-inspired fabrics paired with gold lamé and glittering shoes. Where the era’s boho look could lean toward muted earth tones, Welch’s styling made it bright and theatrical. The outfit is documented in British Vogue’s Coachella style archive.
2011: Fringe and festival staples become recognizable codes
4. Kate Bosworth’s stars-and-stripes T-shirt and shorts
Context: Attendee, day two, 2011. Signature: A stars-and-stripes T-shirt with Current/Elliott shorts. The straightforward combination shows how denim shorts and a graphic top could become a memorable festival uniform without elaborate styling. British Vogue’s 2011 coverage captions this as a day-two outfit.

Context: Attendee dancing to The Strokes, 2011. Signature: A fringed cape in motion. Fringe is one of Coachella’s most durable style motifs; on Iman, it reads as both a statement piece and a garment animated by the festival setting. Vogue’s trend retrospective identifies fringe as a recurring look, while its 2011 coverage documents Iman at the set.
2012: Event dressing and festival dressing share the same desert backdrop
7. Emma Watson’s tiger playsuit, vintage hat and leather jacket
Context: Mulberry event, 2012—not a performance look. Signature: A Mulberry tiger playsuit with a vintage hat and leather jacket. The outfit combines a playful print with more structured outerwear, and its event setting matters: it belongs to a branded gathering rather than the stage. British Vogue’s archive gallery captions the context.

8. Kate Bosworth’s khaki jacket, printed mini and Hunter boots
Context: Festival attendee, 2012. Signature: A khaki jacket over a printed mini dress, finished with Hunter boots. The boots add a practical counterpoint to the short dress, a recurring balance in festival styling between a distinctive silhouette and footwear suited to spending hours outdoors. British Vogue documents the combination in its 2012 gallery.
9. Azealia Banks’s feathered jacket and hot-pink top
Context: Mulberry firepit party, 2012—not her performance costume. Signature: A feathered jacket over a hot-pink top. The vivid color and texture make this a party look with a different purpose from practical daytime festival wear. British Vogue’s 2012 coverage identifies both the outfit and its event setting.
2013: Street style embraces contrast and individuality
10. Fringe, crop tops and jean shorts in the street-style mix
Context: Attendee street style, 2013. Signature: Fringe, crop tops and jean shorts, with heeled sneakers among the featured styling choices. Rather than a single uniform, the looks show how familiar festival pieces could be recombined into individual outfits. Vogue’s 2013 street-style feature frames the mix with the line, “Don’t let the fringe fool you—Coachella is high fashion.”

2023: Coordinated stagewear and individual attendee statements
11. Blackpink’s embellished stage looks
Context: Performer, 2023. Signature: Coordinated looks with silver embellishment and cutouts. Vogue’s caption identifies Lisa in Area and Jennie, Rosé and Jisoo in Dolce & Gabbana. The polished coordination belongs to a group performance, not the looser visual language of attendee street style. Vogue’s 2023 roundup documents the looks and designers.
12. Debbie Harry’s mirror-shard cape with Blondie
Context: Performer with Blondie, 2023. Signature: A cape covered in reflective mirror shards. It turns stage movement and light into part of the outfit, making the garment a performance spectacle rather than a festival-day layer. Vogue describes the cape in its 2023 fashion roundup.
13. Hailey Bieber’s white tank and baggy jeans
Context: Attendee, 2023. Signature: A cropped white tank with extra-baggy jeans. The proportions keep the outfit visually distinctive while drawing on familiar casual basics, a reminder that not every memorable Coachella look depends on fringe or ornate accessories. Vogue’s 2023 gallery identifies the combination.

14. Lil Nas X’s plaid mini and knee boots
Context: Attendee look, 2023. Signature: A cropped bomber, Chopova Lowena plaid mini skirt and Rick Owens knee boots. The mix of cropped outerwear, plaid and striking boots makes the outfit a deliberate fashion statement rather than a conventional boho combination. Vogue’s captioned roundup supplies the designer details.
What makes these looks part of Coachella’s visual history?
Across the decades represented here, several recurring ideas connect otherwise different outfits: easy layers, recognizable accessories, denim and boots, and a willingness to make one garment or color the focal point. Vogue writer Christian Allaire calls the flower crown “the most famous Coachella accessory of all time,” noting its continued presence across festival years in Vogue’s trends retrospective. But a signature accessory is not a dress code. Recent style commentary also emphasizes functional clothing and vintage or reused pieces as present-day options, rather than explanations for what earlier attendees intended to wear. Vogue’s 2026 perspective treats festival style as varied and personal.
