In her December 12, 2022 Gizmodo feature, Linda Codega called the games her favorites and presented them “in no particular order.” The accessible entries show a broad mix of fantasy, historical storytelling, horror, solo play, and different rules approaches—but do not confirm all 20 titles.
What “best” means in this 2022 list
Codega’s feature is an editorial recommendation list rather than an award, review scorecard, or comprehensive survey of games released that year. It offers qualitative impressions, not a shared rating system for comparing the games numerically. Codega also notes that the year’s releases came from both large publishers and independent creators, with crowdfunding established as part of the tabletop ecosystem. Read the original Gizmodo feature.
The accessible text confirms ten selections. It does not provide enough usable information to reconstruct the original complete list of 20, so the titles below should not be mistaken for all of Codega’s picks.
Confirmed games, grouped by the experience they offer
Fantasy worlds and political intrigue
- Journeys Through the Radiant Citadel (Wizards of the Coast) is an adventure anthology praised for centering voices often excluded from tabletop roleplaying and for culturally layered adventures. It is a book of adventures for play, rather than a standalone roleplaying system. Gizmodo’s feature discusses its place on the list.
- Court of Blades (A Couple of Drakes) uses the Forged in the Dark framework for Renaissance-inspired magic, court politics, intrigue, and “mannerpunk” gun-wielders. It may appeal to groups looking for social maneuvering as a central part of play.
- Swords of the Serpentine (Pelgrane Press) earned praise from Gizmodo editor-in-chief David Ewalt for its vivid setting, flexible mechanics, and included sample adventure.
- The One Ring (Free League Publishing) is an updated roleplaying game set in Middle-earth before the events familiar from the films. The feature highlights its travelogue feel and cautions that learning the game can take time.
- Into the Odd (Chris McDowall) is an old-school roleplaying game described as accessible to new and experienced players, with a large dungeon among its features.
Solo play and unusual formats
- Notorious (Jason Price) is a solo game. Codega praised it for creating an immersive experience evocative of playing with friends.
- Women Are Werewolves (Yeonsoo Julian Kim) uses cards to prompt actions and conversations. Its horror metaphor explores queer identity, family, and belonging.
- DIE RPG (Kieron Gillen and Stephanie Hans) is a meta-textual game about gaming and storytelling, built around consequential choices. Codega’s impression came from two sessions, rather than an extended campaign.
History, community, and care
- The Price of Coal (Jennifer Adcock) is a historical story game about the Battle of Blair Mountain. Prompt cards help develop characters’ resistance and the changes taking place in their community.
- First Responders (Bruce R. Cordell and Shanna Germain) focuses on disaster response and helping people. The feature describes tense play centered on altruism.
How to choose among the confirmed entries
Because the feature does not rank games or score them on common criteria, choose by the kind of session you want rather than by an imagined position on a best-of list.

- For helping-focused tension: First Responders centers disaster response and altruism.
- For an experimental take on roleplaying: DIE RPG makes the act of gaming and storytelling part of its subject.
- For fantasy adventure books and systems: compare what you want from the session: Journeys Through the Radiant Citadel supplies adventures, while Swords of the Serpentine, The One Ring, and Into the Odd are roleplaying games with distinct settings or approaches.
The available feature text does not establish a standardized player count, session length, price, or current edition for these recommendations. Check each creator or publisher’s current product information before buying or planning a game.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the list remains useful
Its value is in the range of experiences it points to, not in settling which game was objectively “best.” Across the confirmed titles are group and solo play, fantasy and historical settings, card prompts, a named rules framework, and themes spanning court intrigue, disaster response, identity, and storytelling itself. That variety makes the list a useful starting point for finding a game suited to a particular group or mood, while the incomplete accessible text means it cannot stand in for all 20 original selections.
