In Cheryl Eddy’s February 10, 2017 ranking for io9/Gizmodo, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure takes the top spot, followed by The Matrix and Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The list covers 19 films across 18 positions: The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions share the seventh/eighth-place tie. It is one critic’s selection and judgment—not a definitive or current ranking of Reeves’s filmography. Read the original io9/Gizmodo feature.
How to read this ranking
The list is broad by design: it mixes science-fiction action and cyberpunk with comedy, romance, horror, and fantasy. Its order reflects Eddy’s judgments in 2017, not a universal measure of quality. The two Matrix sequels are tied; listing them separately below does not break that tie.

For a different kind of comparison, Rotten Tomatoes updated a ranking of Reeves’s full filmography on October 17, 2025, using Tomatometer scores. That list has a wider scope and a different basis, so it is not a correction to this genre-focused selection. See Rotten Tomatoes’ filmography ranking.

What stands out across the list
- Comedy at the top: The first and fifth entries are the two Bill & Ted films, with the original in first place.
- Distinct science-fiction premises: The films range from time travel in Bill & Ted to simulated reality in The Matrix and implanted data storage in Johnny Mnemonic.
- Different kinds of Reeves roles: He is a lead in several entries, while The Gift and The Neon Demon give him smaller parts, and Freaked features a heavily disguised uncredited appearance.
- A broad genre boundary: Horror, supernatural stories, romance, and a Christmas fantasy appear alongside conventional science fiction.
AFI’s catalog can help verify cast credits and release years for many of these films. Its stated core coverage is the first 100 years of American film, 1893–1993; entries for later titles are listed credits, not evidence that the catalog’s core coverage extends beyond that period.
