This is a subjective watchlist, not an official ranking: the order balances Moore’s performance, each title’s importance in her career, its recognition, and how well it holds up for viewers now. It includes television as well as film, with the 1996 TV movie If These Walls Could Talk among the clearest reasons to look beyond her theatrical releases.

1. The Substance (2024)

Moore’s lead performance gives this audacious body-horror film its emotional center. The story follows an aging celebrity who turns to a mysterious treatment promising a younger version of herself; its grotesque premise makes fame, beauty, and self-image impossible to ignore. The film won Best Screenplay at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, and Moore received prominent award-season recognition afterward. Cannes’ film page and TIME’s 2025 career profile provide context for its place in her recent work.

2. Ghost (1990)

Moore’s performance as Molly Jensen anchors a romance that shifts into supernatural mystery after the death of her partner, Sam. The film remains one of her most recognizable roles, balancing grief and tenderness with the story’s otherworldly turns. It is an essential pick for understanding her popular-career legacy; Cannes includes it among her career highlights in its Demi Moore profile.

3. A Few Good Men (1992)

In Rob Reiner’s military courtroom drama, Moore plays Navy lawyer JoAnne Galloway, who pushes to take a difficult case seriously even when others underestimate her. The ensemble is stacked with major performances, but Moore brings force and conviction to the film’s legal and ethical conflict. It is another of the defining titles identified in the Cannes profile.

4. If These Walls Could Talk (1996)

This television anthology film follows three women confronting abortion across different decades. Moore appears in the 1950s-set segment, a role that shows her in intimate, socially engaged television drama rather than a theatrical star vehicle. The Television Academy’s Emmy record lists her in the 1997 Outstanding Made for Television Movie category, making this a particularly meaningful TV entry in a list otherwise dominated by films.

5. Indecent Proposal (1993)

Adrian Lyne’s romantic drama turns a couple’s financial crisis into a stark test of love and consent when a wealthy stranger offers a life-changing sum for one night with the wife. Moore’s performance carries the pressure of a choice with no easy emotional answer. The film was a major career title and is named in Cannes’ profile.

6. St. Elmo’s Fire (1985)

This Brat Pack-era drama follows a circle of recent college graduates as they stumble through work, friendship, and adulthood. Moore plays Jules, whose ambition and personal troubles make her one of the group’s more volatile figures. The film is worth watching as an early-career snapshot: its ensemble format gives her room to make a strong impression without yet carrying the story alone.

7. About Last Night… (1986)

In this relationship comedy-drama, Moore stars as Debbie, a young woman whose connection with Danny moves from attraction into the messier realities of commitment. Its adult, conversational approach is a useful contrast with the heightened genre stories that would become associated with Moore later. It also gives her an early lead performance built around chemistry and emotional openness.

8. Disclosure (1994)

Moore plays Meredith Johnson, an executive whose allegation of sexual harassment against a male colleague reverses expectations and drives this corporate thriller. The film’s depiction of workplace power and gender politics reflects the debate of its period, while Moore makes Meredith a formidable, difficult-to-read presence. It is a worthwhile 1990s selection for viewers interested in the roles that challenged assumptions about who could wield power on screen.

9. G.I. Jane (1997)

Moore leads Ridley Scott’s military drama as Jordan O’Neil, a woman selected for a Navy special-operations training program. The physical demands of the role and the film’s focus on institutional barriers make it one of her most visibly transformative performances. Its significance is not only the demanding training narrative, but Moore’s central position in a major studio film built around a woman testing the limits of a closed institution.

  • Let the games begin! Own the genre-defining Saw horror series in all its grisly glory. Five-disc set includes: Saw (2004), Saw II (2005), Saw III (2006), Saw IV (2007), Saw V (2008), Saw VI (2009), Saw: The Final Chapter (2010) and Saw 3D: The Final Chapter (2010).
  • Genre: Horror

10. The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996)

Moore voices Esmeralda in Disney’s animated adaptation of Victor Hugo’s novel. Esmeralda’s compassion and defiance give the film a humane counterweight to its darker story of prejudice and cruelty. This is a distinct change of register from Moore’s live-action work: her contribution is vocal, and the character’s warmth makes the performance memorable within the ensemble.

11. Margin Call (2011)

This tightly wound financial-crisis drama unfolds over roughly one night at an investment bank, as employees realize the scale of the danger facing the firm. Moore plays Sarah Robertson, a senior risk-management executive caught between professional responsibility and the institution’s survival instincts. The role is part of a strong ensemble rather than a star-centered showcase, but the film’s contained tension rewards close attention to how each character responds to a looming ethical failure.

12. The Joneses (2009)

Moore stars as Kate Jones, part of a seemingly perfect family that moves into an affluent neighborhood to market products through the appearance of an enviable lifestyle. The film’s satire of consumer aspiration is especially suited to her poised screen presence: the more convincing the façade, the more revealing its costs become. It is a later-career lead role with a premise that still feels legible in a culture shaped by curated images and conspicuous consumption.

13. Bobby (2006)

Emilio Estevez’s ensemble drama imagines several people whose lives intersect at the Ambassador Hotel on the night Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated. Moore plays Virginia Fallon, an actress whose private struggles are one thread in a large mosaic of characters. The film’s value here is as a supporting performance in an ambitious ensemble, not as a showcase built around Moore alone.

14. The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (2022)

Moore makes a supporting appearance in this self-aware comedy starring Nicolas Cage as a fictionalized version of himself. The film’s playful combination of action, celebrity satire, and affectionate nods to Cage’s screen persona makes it an enjoyable change of pace from Moore’s dramatic roles. It is a smaller contribution than the top-ranked performances, but a welcome example of her appearing in contemporary genre comedy.

15. Landman (2024– )

This ongoing television drama set in the Texas oil industry brings Moore into a contemporary series ensemble. Its inclusion gives the list a current small-screen entry alongside the earlier television film If These Walls Could Talk. Because the series is ongoing, its eventual place in Moore’s career cannot yet be judged as fully as a completed film; it earns its spot as a worthwhile way to see her in a continuing TV role.

How this ranking weighs the choices

The top places favor performances that combine career impact with a distinctive viewing experience: The Substance for its recent transformation and critical recognition, and Ghost and A Few Good Men for their durable place in Moore’s popular film career. The middle ranks make room for major 1990s roles and a television film with a recorded Emmy-category placement. The later entries broaden the picture with animation, ensemble work, comedy, and an ongoing series. A title’s historical prominence and the strength of Moore’s individual role do not always rise in tandem, so the order is a recommendation, not a claim of objective consensus.
