These 15 British programmes stood out in 2025 across crime, documentary, thriller, natural history, comedy-drama and entertainment. This is a curated selection, not an objective ranking: it combines the British Film Institute’s detailed picks with three additional titles named in its year-end overview. The services below are the UK listings given by the sources in December 2025, not a guarantee that each programme is still available or included with a standard subscription.
British crime and social-issue dramas
Adolescence — Netflix
Stephen Graham and Jack Thorne’s four-part psychological crime drama begins after 13-year-old Jamie is arrested for killing a classmate. Each episode was filmed in one continuous take, a formal choice that intensifies the story’s close focus on a family and the forces shaping a young boy. The series confronts toxic masculinity and online misogyny. Ofcom reported 12.2 million UK viewers through the end of March 2025, making it the most-watched show of the first quarter; Ofcom credits Barb for the audience data. That is a Q1 figure, not a full-year total. BFI’s 2025 selection describes the series; Ofcom’s report gives the audience context.

Bibaa & Nicole: Murder in the Park — Sky
This documentary revisits the murders of sisters Bibaa Henry and Nicole Smallman and the police failures exposed by the case. Interviews and evidence, including 999 calls, give the account a particular immediacy. BFI quotes their mother, Mina Smallman: “Nothing about that team made me think they didn’t have our backs.” Read the BFI selection.
Breaking Ranks: Inside Israel’s War — ITV
Benjamin Zand’s testimony-driven documentary reports claims by IDF soldiers interviewed by its producers that they witnessed war crimes. Those are claims reported by the film, not findings independently established by this recommendation. In the BFI’s December 2025 listing, it was available through ITV’s platforms and freely on YouTube. See the BFI entry.

Get Millie Black — Channel 4
Marlon James’s crime noir follows former Met detective Millie as she returns to Kingston, Jamaica, and joins the Jamaican police. The parallel story of her sister Hibiscus gives the series an intimate emotional counterpoint to its investigation. BFI’s description calls it emotionally forceful.
The Hack — ITV
Jack Thorne’s seven-episode drama brings together the phone-hacking scandal and the unsolved murder of private investigator Daniel Morgan. David Tennant plays journalist Nick Davies; Robert Carlyle plays DCS Dave Cook. The pairing makes the series a choice for viewers interested in journalism, policing and unresolved questions of accountability. Read the BFI entry.
Psychological thrillers and mysteries
The Feud — 5
Aschlin Ditta’s crime thriller starts with a lawyer’s new kitchen and a neighbour dispute, then turns the property-boundary quarrel into an absurd, camp tangle of blackmail, kidnapping and murder. It is the list’s most deliberately comic take on escalating mystery. BFI’s entry outlines its premise.

- Factory sealed DVD
The Girlfriend — Amazon Prime Video
This psychological thriller pits Laura, a wealthy gallery owner, against Cherry, her son’s new girlfriend. By shifting between their points of view, it encourages viewers to revise their assumptions about what they have seen. See the BFI description.
Prime Target — Apple TV
Cambridge mathematics student Edward Brooks makes a breakthrough and attracts a mysterious enemy. He teams up with government agent Taylah in Steve Thompson’s high-budget escapist thriller, filmed in UK and US locations. The BFI entry describes the setup and production.
Documentaries on tragedy, accountability and Britain
Grenfell: Uncovered — Netflix
Olaide Sadiq’s documentary examines the 2017 Grenfell Tower fire, in which 72 people died. It draws on first-hand accounts and analysis of institutional failures. The subject involves bereaved families and continuing accountability questions, so this is a grave, often difficult watch rather than light viewing. Read the BFI description.
Rank #3
Shifty — BBC
Adam Curtis’s five-part documentary uses archival footage and pop music to examine forces unleashed on Britain in the 1980s. The BFI notes that its fragmented construction and captions may frustrate some viewers, as well as describing the series’ argument. It was listed as available on BBC iPlayer from June 2025. See the BFI entry.
Caroline Flack: Search for the Truth — Disney+
The BFI names this documentary among the year’s programmes examining a real-life tragedy. Its overview does not provide a fuller synopsis, so this recommendation is limited to that description. BFI’s overview includes the title.

The BFI says the documentary was initially commissioned by the BBC, then dropped and licensed to Channel 4 after controversy around another documentary, Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone. Its inclusion reflects the year’s wider questions about broadcaster trust; it does not resolve the controversy. Read the BFI overview.

Natural history and comedy-drama
Ocean with David Attenborough — Disney+
This natural-history film explores ocean life and the damage caused by bottom trawling. The BFI quotes Attenborough: “We have seen more of other planets that we have of the ocean.” See the BFI entry.
Riot Women — BBC
Sally Wainwright’s West Yorkshire comedy-drama follows menopausal women who form a rock band. Friendship and parent-child relationships sit alongside dementia caregiving and structural misogyny, giving the series a mix of music, domestic life and social observation. Read the BFI description.
