The best rides at Universal Studios Hollywood depend on what you want: high-speed thrills, franchise-themed motion rides, or family-friendly attractions. This editorial ranking weighs ride variety, immersion, thrill level, access requirements, and practical value—not park-certified ratings. One important planning note: Universal currently lists Jurassic World – The Ride as closed for refurbishment, with a scheduled reopening on November 21, 2026. Check the park calendar close to your visit.
What are the best rides at Universal Studios Hollywood?
Here is a practical shortlist, ranked for the strength and distinctiveness of each experience. The Studio Tour is included because it is a signature attraction, though it is a tour rather than a conventional ride. Openings, operating hours, and requirements can change, so check Universal’s current rider guide and park calendar before you go.
- Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift — Universal describes this as its first high-speed outdoor coaster. It is the clearest pick for visitors seeking a major coaster thrill, but its 51-inch minimum height excludes many younger guests. A test seat, single rider line, and child swap are available. Loose articles are strictly prohibited, and riders must pass through a metal detector.
- Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge — This SUPER NINTENDO WORLD attraction blends 3D/4D visuals with goggles, steering, coin collecting, and shell throwing. Multiple outcomes and scoring give it an interactive edge. Minimum height is 40 inches; children under 48 inches need a supervising companion.
- Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey — A motion-simulation thrill experience that takes guests through Hogwarts and into a flight with Harry and friends. The 48-inch minimum is relatively high. Child swap and single rider are available, and safety-restraint size restrictions apply.
- Jurassic World – The Ride — The water-track adventure begins as a dinosaur cruise and turns into an escape involving an Indominus rex and major drops. Universal says riders will get significantly wet. The minimum height is 42 inches, but the attraction is currently listed as closed for refurbishment and scheduled to reopen November 21, 2026.
- Revenge of the Mummy – The Ride — A strong indoor thrill option for visitors who want a darker, enclosed ride experience. The current rider guide lists a 48-inch minimum and lockers are available; check the guide for restrictions before riding.
- TRANSFORMERS: The Ride-3D — A Lower Lot motion-simulation battle with 3D/4D effects. Its 40-inch minimum makes it accessible to more children than several headline thrill rides, though children under 48 inches need a supervising companion.
- Despicable Me Minion Mayhem — A family-oriented motion ride with tilting, shaking, accelerations, and drops. The minimum height is 40 inches, and Universal describes stationary seating as an option for guests who prefer not to experience the motion.
- The Secret Life of Pets: Off the Leash — A family-focused dark ride and a useful contrast to the park’s more intense motion experiences. Its minimum height is 34 inches, the lowest listed among the attractions in this selection.
- The Simpsons Ride — A motion-simulation attraction for guests looking for a themed ride rather than a coaster. Check Universal’s current guide for its height, accessibility, and rider requirements; wait times and popularity vary by day.
- Flight of the Hippogriff — A short family coaster with climbs, sudden accelerations, tilts, and drops. Its 39-inch minimum is lower than the larger coasters; children under 48 inches need a supervising companion.
- Studio Tour — A behind-the-scenes trip through movie sets and a distinctive way to see the studio side of the park. Universal gives an approximate duration of 45–60 minutes, not a guaranteed operating time, and says guests will get wet.
Which rides should you prioritize?
Use your group’s height, appetite for motion, and time in the park to narrow the list. The attraction’s minimum height is not the only rule: supervising-companion requirements and restraint or accessibility restrictions may also apply.
- For the biggest coaster thrill: prioritize Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift if everyone who wants to ride meets the 51-inch minimum.
- For interactive theming: Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge combines physical controls with scoring and game-inspired effects.
- For a major indoor thrill: consider Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey or Revenge of the Mummy, subject to their 48-inch minimums and other restrictions.
- For families with shorter children: The Secret Life of Pets: Off the Leash has a 34-inch minimum; Flight of the Hippogriff requires 39 inches.
- For a broader studio experience: set aside time for the Studio Tour, which is much longer than a typical ride queue-and-ride cycle.
What rides can my child ride at Universal Studios Hollywood?
Start with the child’s measured height in shoes, then confirm the current official rules. These minimums are useful for screening, but companion rules and other restrictions still apply.

Which rides get you wet, and what should you do with loose items?
Universal warns that Jurassic World – The Ride riders get significantly wet and that Studio Tour guests get wet. Jurassic World is currently closed, but its water exposure matters if it reopens before your visit. A compact poncho is an optional precaution, not a guarantee of staying dry.
Loose-article policies vary. Universal lists lockers at Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, Jurassic World – The Ride, and Revenge of the Mummy. Hollywood Drift has stricter handling: loose articles are prohibited, and riders pass through a metal detector. Check the attraction’s current instructions before entering its queue.
