There is no objective, definitive ranking of the greatest jazz albums. The 100-record list published by Matthew Lynch in The Tech Edvocate on March 19, 2025, is one editor’s selection: it puts Miles Davis’s Kind of Blue first, followed by John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme. This guide explains what that ranking offers, how to use it as a listening route, and why other well-made lists can reach different choices.
What this list is—and what it is not
Lynch’s list aims to represent records that are influential, innovative, and enduring. It gives brief album descriptions and sample tracks, but does not describe a voting panel or scoring formula. Its numbered order is therefore an editorial judgment, not a settled canon. Read the March 19, 2025 list at The Tech Edvocate.

Selection context changes the result, too. Imprescindibles del Jazz, a selection by Biblioteques de Barcelona, presents 50 records available through the library and says it used existing best-album lists as reference points. Its holdings and purpose shape its selection; it is not an objective universal ranking. Read the library’s jazz selection.
Where to begin: five records that show the range
The first five positions in Lynch’s list move quickly across styles. They make a useful opening sequence if you want to hear how varied the phrase “great jazz album” can be.
#1 Best Overall
- Shrink-wrapped
-
Miles Davis, Kind of Blue
Ranked No. 1 in Lynch’s list, this is a natural starting point for its relaxed, spacious ensemble sound. Try “So What,” “All Blues,” and “Blue in Green.”
-
John Coltrane, A Love Supreme
At No. 2, Coltrane’s four-part suite provides a more concentrated, spiritually charged listen. The list highlights “Acknowledgement,” “Resolution,” and “Pursuance.”
Rank #2
-
Charles Mingus, The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady
Mingus’s large-scale, arranged work shows how jazz improvisation can sit inside a vividly composed, orchestral design.
-
Miles Davis, Bitches Brew
This electric ensemble recording offers a sharp change of texture from Kind of Blue and points toward jazz fusion.

Smooth Jazz #1 Hits- Shrink-wrapped
- brand: Concord
- manufacturer: Concord Records
-
John Coltrane, Giant Steps
A demanding post-bop landmark, it brings the focus back to fast-moving harmony and virtuosic improvisation.
Keep listening beyond the opening five
The list’s broader selections make clear that jazz history cannot be represented by one sound or one kind of ensemble. Ornette Coleman’s The Shape of Jazz to Come offers a different approach to improvisation; Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong’s Ella and Louis centers two distinctive singers; and Stan Getz and João Gilberto’s Getz/Gilberto brings Brazilian bossa nova into the conversation.
Rank #4
Other lists widen the map in their own ways. The Biblioteques de Barcelona selection includes Dave Brubeck’s Time Out, Eric Dolphy’s Out to Lunch!, Billie Holiday’s Lady in Satin, and Alice Coltrane’s Journey in Satchidananda, alongside Kind of Blue, A Love Supreme, and The Shape of Jazz to Come. These are useful listening alternatives, not evidence that every list agrees. The Monk Youth Jazz & STEAM Collective also notes Monk recordings’ presence on best-album lists, but the passage does not identify the list compiler; treat it as a reminder that Thelonious Monk’s work belongs in the wider conversation, not as a ranking endorsement. A useful ranking makes its choices legible. These criteria help explain why one editor might place a record high, and why another selection may differ:
Recommended Free Tools
Best Value
- Historical influence: What did the recording contribute to jazz’s development, and how did later musicians respond?
- Musical innovation: Consider composition, improvisation, arrangement, and the way the musicians interact.
- Range: A broad selection should account for different eras, regions, traditions, and styles, including vocal and instrumental jazz.
- Accessibility and depth: Some records offer an inviting first listen; others reward patience and repeated attention. A strong guide can include both.
- Album-length achievement: Ask whether a record works as a sustained statement. Keep in mind that some foundational recordings first appeared in other formats or were later assembled as albums.
These are editorial lenses, not a formula that can prove one ranking correct. A library selection may also be shaped by what the institution holds, while a broad historical list may be organized around different priorities.
Turn the ranking into a listening plan
Rather than treating 100 entries as homework, use the list to follow a question that interests you. Begin with one record, listen to the suggested tracks, then compare it with a record that changes one major element—voice versus instrument, small group versus large ensemble, or acoustic versus electric sound.
- For a first pass: Start with Kind of Blue, then compare its atmosphere with the more suite-like A Love Supreme.
- For contrasting textures: Move from Kind of Blue to Bitches Brew and notice the shift toward electric jazz.
- For different approaches to improvisation: Set Giant Steps beside The Shape of Jazz to Come.
- For vocal jazz: Try Ella and Louis and then Getz/Gilberto; listen for how voice, phrasing, and ensemble setting shape each record.
If you are collecting physical editions or choosing a stream, check that the release is the recording you intend to hear. A title alone does not identify a particular edition, format, pressing, price, or current availability.
