The 10 Worst Theme Parks in the World: What the Evidence Actually Shows

A 2026 study identified Alton Towers as the most disappointing attraction overall, not the worst theme park. Here’s what the evidence can—and cannot—say.

There is no defensible, comparable worldwide ranking of the ten worst theme parks in the available evidence. A 2026 study reported by Euronews names Alton Towers as the most disappointing tourist attraction overall, but it covers attractions of many kinds—not a theme-park-only top ten. Recent visitor accounts offer clues about frustrations at Motiongate, Drayton Manor and Trans Studio Bali, but cannot establish that those parks are among the world’s worst. Here is what the evidence can support, and how to judge a park before you go.

What does “worst” mean?

A park might disappoint because of poor value, long queues, unavailable rides, customer service, or a mismatch between its marketing and a visitor’s expectations. Those are different measures: a low review score does not tell you whether the problem was price, crowds or a specific ride closure. A credible comparison would need consistent evidence across the same parks and period.

The available evidence does not provide that comparison for ten theme parks. Rather than present an unsupported global ranking, this article distinguishes a broad attraction study from individual visitor reports.

What the 2026 study says about Alton Towers

Euronews reported on a 2026 Radical Storage study that analyzed 99,547 reviews using 90 negative-review keywords. Its reported sample covered 5,832 attractions in 50 countries. Attractions with fewer than 2,000 reviews were excluded; the study also excluded Russia, Ukraine and Israel. It ranked attractions by the share of reviews identified as poor, with steps to discount false positives such as “not disappointing.” The study’s reported average negative-review rate was 5.2%.

Alton Towers, in Staffordshire, had a reported 38.2% negative-review share. The report said 15% of its reviews specifically complained about value for money, compared with a 1.3% study average for that complaint. The 38.2% figure was down from 49.4% in the previous year’s list. Euronews wrote: “For the second year running in Radical Storage’s ranking, Alton Towers in the British county of Staffordshire was found to be the world’s most disappointing tourist attraction.” That finding concerns the study’s overall attraction category, not theme parks alone, and the figures are study results as reported by Euronews—not an independent safety or quality inspection. Trans Studio Bali, Indonesia

Visitor accounts on the park’s Tripadvisor page include complaints about ride availability, communication, value and cleanliness, alongside positive visits. The page also includes a management response explaining that ride availability can vary because of operational or maintenance requirements; that is the park’s explanation, not an independently established account of how often rides are unavailable. How to use “worst theme park” rankings when planning a visit

Before relying on a list or rating, check what it measures and when its evidence was collected. A negative-review share, an overall star score and a single account of a long wait answer different questions. For a specific trip, prioritize recent details relevant to your plans:

Alley Cat Games Dice Theme Park Blue
  • In Dice Theme Park, when you activate your attractions you’ll pip down the dice that were activated, and then move them to an adjacent tile
  • Activate that tile and move the dice again, creating a cascade that can go on as long as you have tiles to activate
  • The more efficiently you can move your dice around to activate the most rewarding rides, the more points and money you receive. It’s combo-tastic!
  • Customise your park with various upgrades, attractions, and mascot skills
  • Each game you’ll create a new park with new combos to explore
  • Value: Look for comments about what admission includes and whether visitors felt the experience justified the cost.
  • Queues and crowds: Check dated reports for your intended day or season; an individual’s wait is not a forecast for your visit.
  • Ride availability: Search for recent reports about closures, and check the park’s own operating updates before travelling.
  • Service and communication: Distinguish repeated, recent accounts from isolated incidents, and note whether reviews describe a response from the park.
  • Expectations: Compare the attractions and experience advertised with what visitors say they actually found.

For broad comparisons, look for a common sample, period and scoring method. The 2026 Radical Storage analysis offers a measurable signal about negative reviews across attractions, but it does not establish a comparable top ten of theme parks. Public discussion prompts asking people to name their worst park are useful examples of personal-opinion questions, not representative evidence: one asks what the worst visited theme park was and why, and another asks about the most disappointing amusement park.
