The ten-film list spans science-fiction adventure, action, sports drama, comedy, drama, and James Bond—an evocative snapshot of the year’s popular cinema, though not proof by itself that the industry as a whole was different from today’s.

These are Box Office Mojo’s reported U.S. domestic grosses for films released in 1985. The amounts are nominal box-office receipts, not estimates of ticket admissions.

Why the ranking depends on what “highest-grossing” means
A calendar-year chart can sort films by release year or by when they earned money. Those are different questions. Box Office Mojo’s list above is for movies released in 1985. The Numbers describes its separate in-year chart this way: “This chart ranks movies by the amount they earned during 1985. It includes movies released in previous years that earned money during 1985.” In that chart, Back to the Future ranks first, Rambo: First Blood Part II second, and Beverly Hills Cop third; the latter was released in 1984 but continued earning in 1985.

See The Numbers’ 1985 earnings chart. Its methodology is useful for understanding the distinction, but its figures should not be mixed with Box Office Mojo’s release-year ranking as if the two lists measure the same thing.
What the ten films say about 1985 cinema
The chart is striking for its range. It places science-fiction adventure beside hard-edged action, sports drama, science-fiction comedy, crime drama, youth adventure, police comedy, detective comedy, and a Bond film. Several entries belong to established series or franchises: Rambo: First Blood Part II, Rocky IV, Police Academy 2, and A View to a Kill. Others—including Cocoon, Witness, and Fletch—are not sequels in this top ten.

- Features John Rambo in classic illustrated action artwork, complete with his signature red headband, dramatic battlefield scenery and bold Rambo logo inspired by vintage movie poster graphics.
- Packed with unmistakable 1980s action cinema style, this officially licensed design is ideal for Rambo and Sylvester Stallone fans who love retro film posters, action heroes and nostalgic movie artwork.
- Classic fit with seamless body for a smooth, comfortable silhouette that moves naturally with you
- Pouch pocket and double-lined hood for added warmth and everyday functionality
That mixture makes the chart a useful portrait of prominent releases, not a complete account of what audiences watched or why the films succeeded. Grosses alone do not establish audience demographics, release strategies, or the causes of a movie’s popularity. Nor does one year’s top ten demonstrate how the entire film industry compares with the present.

Cumulative worldwide totals
A cumulative worldwide chart counts a movie’s box office across all the years it played, rather than only its 1985 earnings. The Numbers says: “This chart ranks movies by their total cumulative worldwide box office earnings for movies released in 1985.” It adds: “Each movie is ranked by its total gross across all years it played, not just earnings during 1985.” On that basis, its currently displayed cumulative totals include $398,210,208 for Back to the Future, $300,400,000 for Rambo: First Blood Part II, and $300,373,716 for Rocky IV. These are lifetime worldwide figures in a chart accessed in 2026, not 1985-only grosses.

Inflation-adjusted estimates
Inflation-adjusted figures offer another lens, but they are estimates rather than audited admission totals. The Numbers says its “Inflation-adjusted figures are based on ticket sale estimates.” In its adjusted chart for 1985 earnings, it estimates Back to the Future at $651,400,305, followed by Rambo: First Blood Part II at $506,751,709 and Beverly Hills Cop at $440,961,002. Those adjusted estimates should be kept distinct from Box Office Mojo’s nominal release-year grosses.
For a meaningful comparison with another year, use the same territory, earnings window, approach to re-releases, and inflation method on both sides. The rankings above do not provide a matched comparison with today’s box office, and none of these gross figures should be read as ticket counts.
