Tony Scott’s highest-grossing film, by FilmDB’s reported worldwide theatrical totals, is Top Gun (1986), at $356.8 million. Beverly Hills Cop II and Enemy of the State round out the top three. This is a box-office ranking—not a judgment of quality or profitability—and covers only films with reported grosses in FilmDB’s directing filmography.
How the ranking works
The list below uses FilmDB’s reported worldwide theatrical grosses and orders films from highest to lowest. The figures are rounded database totals, not audited measures of studio revenue, profit, or ticket sales. Worldwide totals can differ between databases as figures are revised and re-releases are counted; the ranking therefore keeps to one source rather than mixing totals.

FilmDB lists 16 directing titles with reported worldwide totals and seven additional directing credits as “Financial data pending.” Those missing figures are not zero, so this is the ten highest-grossing films among the titles in that filmography with reported grosses—not a complete ranking of every Tony Scott directing credit.

What the numbers say—and what they do not
Top Gun leads, but database totals differ
FilmDB reports Top Gun at $356.8 million worldwide. Other databases show different cumulative totals: Box Office Mojo reports $360,552,341, while The Numbers reports $363,992,074. The Numbers page also lists multiple re-releases, including a domestic 40th-anniversary release dated May 13, 2026. These totals use separate database records and should not be combined with FilmDB’s figures in the ranking. See Box Office Mojo’s Top Gun page and The Numbers’ Top Gun page.
Days of Thunder and Crimson Tide are nearly tied
FilmDB’s rounded figures put Days of Thunder at $157.9 million and Crimson Tide at $157.4 million, a difference of about half a million dollars. The rounded figures support that order, but not a claim of greater precision. The Numbers reports $157,670,733 for Days of Thunder, illustrating how database totals can vary. Its page lists the original U.S. wide release as June 27, 1990, and an Australian wide release on June 5, 2020. See The Numbers’ Days of Thunder page.

A gross is not a measure of profit or quality
A worldwide box-office gross does not reveal how much a film earned after production and marketing costs, distribution terms, or exhibitors’ shares. Nor does it rank critical or audience quality. The list answers a narrower question: which of Scott’s directed films have the highest reported worldwide theatrical totals in FilmDB’s dataset?
