The 10 Greatest Superhero Movies of All Time, Ranked

From Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse to Superman, this broad, argued ranking weighs superhero films by craft, influence, emotional depth and how well they stand alone.

What are the best superhero movies of all time? There is no single score that can settle it: critics’ ratings, audience response, craft, cultural influence and historical importance measure different things. This ranking treats “greatest” as an editorial judgment, balancing those qualities with a practical question: does the film work for someone who has not done extensive franchise homework?

The scope is broad: animated films count, as do antiheroes and original superhero-adjacent stories, alongside Marvel and DC adaptations. That approach reflects the range of films included in Rotten Tomatoes’ superhero guide. The order below is my own, not a universal measurement or a reproduction of an aggregator’s ranking.

How this ranking works

Each placement weighs five things: influence on superhero cinema or film history; direction, writing, performance and craft; the distinctiveness of the hero and conflict; staying power in critical or cultural conversation; and accessibility as a standalone film. A franchise entry can earn a place, but scale or box-office success alone is not a verdict on artistic achievement.

Rankings also depend on method. Rotten Tomatoes’ guide, updated December 15, 2025, gathers Fresh and Certified Fresh superhero films with at least 20 reviews and orders them by Tomatometer. In that snapshot, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and The Incredibles both had 97% Tomatometer scores, but their Popcornmeter scores differed: 93% and 75%, respectively. Those are changeable critic and audience measures, not a complete account of historical influence or personal attachment. TIME’s 2019 ranking covered MCU films only and weighted staff choices at 60%, public vote or box office at 20%, and Rotten Tomatoes’ critical vote at 20%; it placed Black Panther first within that narrower scope. Neither list answers the whole-genre question by itself.

The 10 greatest superhero movies, ranked

1. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)

This animated film makes a familiar superhero origin feel formally new. Its comic-book textures, kinetic editing and shifting visual styles are not decoration: they make Miles Morales’s uncertainty and growth part of the movie’s language. The multiverse premise opens the story to a vivid ensemble without losing its emotional center in Miles. It is accessible without requiring a viewer to know every Spider-Man iteration, and its animation is central to why it belongs at the top rather than a concession to the live-action norm.

Rotten Tomatoes’ Critics Consensus calls it “a purely enjoyable adventure with heart, humor, and plenty of superhero action,” praising the combination of bold storytelling and striking animation. The guide’s December 15, 2025 snapshot listed 97% Tomatometer and 93% Popcornmeter; those figures may change.

2. The Incredibles (2004)

Brad Bird turns superhero abilities into a sharp domestic and social comedy: the central conflict is not just stopping a villain, but reconciling individual talent, family obligation and a culture that wants extraordinary people to stay ordinary. The action is clear and inventive, while the family relationships give the spectacle consequences. It stands entirely on its own, with no franchise homework required.

Rotten Tomatoes’ Critics Consensus describes it as a witty, fun contribution to animated superhero cinema. Its guide snapshot updated December 15, 2025 gave it 97% Tomatometer and 75% Popcornmeter. The gap is a useful reminder that critic and audience ratings are distinct measures, even for a widely admired title.

3. Superman (1978)

Richard Donner’s film established a durable screen grammar for the modern superhero: a larger-than-life hero presented with earnestness, wonder and a human-scale identity. Christopher Reeve makes Clark Kent’s awkwardness and Superman’s confidence feel like two facets of one character, not a costume change. The effects show their age, but the film’s conviction and sense of myth remain unusually potent.

The American Film Institute says Donner’s Superman “ushered in a contemporary age of cinematic superheroes” and identifies Reeve’s portrayal among its greatest cinematic heroes. That is AFI’s institutional interpretation, not proof that every ranking must place the film first. Rotten Tomatoes’ guide snapshot updated December 15, 2025 listed it at #32, with 87% Tomatometer and 86% Popcornmeter; an aggregate position does not erase its historical importance.

4. Black Panther (2018)

Ryan Coogler’s film gives its hero a real political and moral problem: T’Challa must decide what responsibility a powerful, protected nation owes to people beyond its borders. The conflict between T’Challa and Killmonger gives the spectacle ideological stakes, while the performances and world-building make Wakanda feel like more than a backdrop. It is a strong entry point for newcomers, though its place in the wider MCU adds context for returning viewers.

Its top placement in TIME’s 2019 MCU-only ranking reflects that list’s stated mix of staff opinion, public vote or box office, and critics’ ratings. It should not be mistaken for a genre-wide consensus; the methodology and scope are different from this list.

5. The Dark Knight (2008)

Christopher Nolan’s crime-thriller approach makes the superhero premise a vehicle for questions about fear, civic order and the compromises institutions make under pressure. Heath Ledger’s Joker is an unforgettable source of chaos, but the film’s lasting force comes from the choices it forces on Bruce Wayne, Harvey Dent and Gotham. Its scale is impressive without making the moral conflict hard to follow.

The film is more rewarding with the preceding Batman Begins, but it remains legible on its own. Its influence is visible in how often later superhero films have pursued darker tones and crime-film realism, even when few have matched the balance of character, suspense and spectacle.

6. Logan (2017)

Logan treats the superhero as a weary person whose body, memory and obligations are failing him. The road-movie structure gives its violence consequence, and Hugh Jackman’s performance makes the character’s guarded tenderness as important as his ferocity. The film’s western inflection and R-rated violence distinguish it from the genre’s more family-oriented center.

It is one of the strongest antihero stories in the field, but its emotional payoff is richer for viewers familiar with Wolverine’s history and the earlier X-Men films. That reliance on accumulated character history is the trade-off for its unusually earned sense of an ending.

7. Spider-Man 2 (2004)

Sam Raimi’s sequel understands the cost of being a hero in everyday terms: time, money, relationships and the temptation to give up. Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker is defined as much by those private pressures as by his fights with Doctor Octopus. The action set pieces are memorable, but the film’s real achievement is making responsibility feel like a continuing burden rather than a single triumphant decision.

It is approachable without broad comic-book knowledge, though familiarity with the first film helps. Its balance of comic-book exuberance and sincere melodrama remains a high point for live-action Spider-Man.

8. Wonder Woman (2017)

Patty Jenkins gives Diana a clear emotional journey from idealism to a more complicated understanding of human conflict. Gal Gadot’s direct performance anchors a film that moves from mythic origin to wartime adventure, with the contrast between Themyscira and the front providing its strongest visual and thematic tension. Its first half is particularly effective at making Diana’s values feel active rather than merely stated.

The film works as a standalone origin, and its importance also lies in bringing a woman-led superhero epic to the center of mainstream conversation. Its final battle is less distinctive than the character work that precedes it, but the overall arc remains compelling.

9. Unbreakable (2000)

M. Night Shyamalan approaches superhero mythology as a quiet mystery about an ordinary man discovering what his body can withstand. The restrained pace, muted palette and domestic setting make the genre feel uncanny rather than spectacular. Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson build the film around a tension between belief and evidence, giving its origin story the shape of a psychological drama.

It asks for patience rather than franchise knowledge. Its influence is less about a template of action scenes than the permission it gave filmmakers to explore superhero ideas through intimate, genre-bending stories.

10. The Incredibles 2 (2018)

The sequel earns its place by extending the original’s family-and-identity premise instead of simply repeating its set pieces. It shifts the spotlight to Helen Parr and uses the family’s changing roles to explore public expectations, work and caregiving. The animation is technically assured, and the film is easy to follow as a standalone adventure, though the original gives its character dynamics more depth.

Its inclusion underscores the breadth of the category: superhero films can be animated family stories as well as live-action mythology, crime drama or political allegory. It does not surpass the first Incredibles, but it develops that world with enough craft and perspective to round out this ranking.

Which superhero movies are worth watching first?

For a first watch without franchise preparation, start with Into the Spider-Verse, The Incredibles, Superman, Unbreakable or Wonder Woman: each establishes its central world and conflict within the film. For a deeper character arc, watch Logan after at least some of the X-Men films, and watch Spider-Man 2 after the 2002 Spider-Man. Black Panther and The Dark Knight work independently, though the former sits inside the MCU and the latter follows Batman Begins.

Why historical importance and rankings can disagree

A current critic-led list is a snapshot of reviews and eligibility rules; it is not a history of the genre. AFI’s 10 Top 10, for example, was a 2008 project spanning ten classic American genres, not a superhero ranking. AFI says it collected 500 nominations for consideration by a jury of more than 1,500 creative-community leaders, using criteria including critical recognition, major awards, popularity over time, historical significance and cultural impact. That kind of framework helps explain why influence and cultural staying power can matter alongside a current score, but it cannot supply a superhero top ten on its own.

That distinction matters especially for Superman (1978): its place in the development of cinematic superheroes is a different question from where it lands on a contemporary review-aggregator page. The same principle applies across this list: a ranking is most useful when its scope and criteria are visible, and when it treats audience response, critical consensus and film history as related but separate evidence.
