Spinal Tap’s greatest songs work because the music is convincing even when the premise is ridiculous. This ranking draws from the 11 tracks on the original This Is Spinal Tap soundtrack, weighing hook, performance, parody, comic concept and range across styles. It is an editorial ranking, not a poll or a claim of a definitive order.

How this ranking works

The source pool is the original soundtrack’s 11 tracks, as listed on the official soundtrack CD listing. The order below balances musical memorability with how sharply each song sends up its chosen rock style. Spinal Tap’s joke is not simply that the lyrics are silly: the songs have hooks, arrangements and performances that make the parody land.

The ranking uses the original soundtrack versions. A later release, The End Continues, includes new versions of several songs; those are distinct recordings, not replacements for the soundtrack takes.

The 10 greatest Spinal Tap songs

1. “Big Bottom”

“Big Bottom” is the most complete Spinal Tap song: a memorable hard-rock strut built around a joke so blunt that it becomes part of the song’s oversized confidence. The sexual satire is literal, but the performance commits to the swagger rather than winking its way through it. AllMusic identifies it as one of the soundtrack’s big hitters. Its staying power is also evident in the country reimagining reviewed by the Associated Press for The End Continues.

2. “Stonehenge”

“Stonehenge” turns rock’s taste for ancient mysteries and monumental stage spectacle into a mock epic. The musical scale is part of the joke, not an excuse to abandon it: the song takes its grandeur seriously enough to make the absurdity sharper. AllMusic and The Guardian both single it out as a standout. A new version featuring Elton John appears on The End Continues.

3. “Tonight I’m Gonna Rock You Tonight”

This is arena-rock bravado with a hook strong enough to carry the pose. Its crude sexual persona is central to the satire, though the joke has aged less comfortably than the music. Rotten Tomatoes’ retrospective notes both that datedness and the song’s guitar solo, hook and drums—a useful reminder that Spinal Tap’s musical execution is a major part of its comedy.

4. “Sex Farm”

“Sex Farm” makes its farm-and-sex premise impossible to miss, then delivers it as compact heavy-rock parody. The song targets heavy metal’s machismo by pushing its bluntness to a comic extreme. AllMusic includes it among the original album’s highlights.

5. “(Listen To The) Flower People”

Where the metal songs play up volume and macho posturing, “(Listen To The) Flower People” shifts into faux-psychedelic late-1960s pop. That change of style broadens the joke: Spinal Tap can imitate more than one era of rock, and does not need a wall of guitars to make the performance funny. Rotten Tomatoes describes it as a psychedelic parody. Elton John appears on a later version on The End Continues.

6. “Gimme Some Money”

“Gimme Some Money” takes the joke back to a faux-1960s beat-group sound. Its place here reflects the soundtrack’s range: the band can parody the era’s pop-group manner as well as heavy metal’s excesses. AllMusic notes that the soundtrack’s period-inspired material includes this song and “Flower People.”

7. “Hell Hole”

“Hell Hole” is a forceful entry point to the band’s hard-rock side. It works as a song before it works as a parody, which is why the swagger feels persuasive rather than like a sketch built around a punchline. AllMusic groups it with “Tonight I’m Gonna Rock You Tonight” among the catchy hard-rock tracks; the official soundtrack listing places it first.

8. “Cups and Cakes”

“Cups and Cakes” is a small, sweetly mannered counterpoint to the band’s bombast. Its gentleness makes the larger collection feel less one-note, and the contrast is its comic strength. The Associated Press describes the later version on The End Continues as Beatles-inspired; that guest version features Paul McCartney.

9. “Heavy Duty”

“Heavy Duty” plays its hard-rock anthem straight enough for the earnestness to become funny. Its placement is an editorial judgment rather than a published consensus ranking, but it belongs in a top ten drawn from the original soundtrack: the song captures the band’s knack for making an oversized rock pose sound musically plausible.

10. “Rock And Roll Creation”

“Rock And Roll Creation” rounds out the list with grand-scale hard-rock posturing. The official soundtrack listing confirms it as one of the original album’s tracks. Its position here is a judgment about the balance of the ten-song selection, not a claim that critics or listeners have settled on this order.

Which original soundtrack track is left out?

The original soundtrack has 11 tracks, so one song does not make this top ten: “America.” Its omission is a ranking choice, not a judgment that it is unavailable or without value.

How the later album fits in

The End Continues is a separate 13-track album released alongside Spinal Tap II: The End Continues on September 12, 2025, according to the official album listing. It includes guest versions of “Big Bottom,” “Stonehenge,” “Cups and Cakes” and “(Listen To The) Flower People.” Listed guests include Elton John, Paul McCartney, Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood. Those later interpretations add a new chapter to the catalogue; this ranking remains focused on the original soundtrack versions.
