Richard Linklater’s best films are not all trying to do the same thing. This ranking weighs formal ambition, character and dialogue, cultural and career significance, accessibility, and how distinctly each film represents his range—from loose youth ensembles to intimate romance, animation experiments, and studio comedy. It is an argued selection, not a definitive consensus list.

10. Everybody Wants Some!! (2016)

Linklater returns to the freewheeling group dynamics of Dazed and Confused in this college-baseball comedy, which the BFI describes as a spiritual sequel. The setting changes, but the pleasure is familiar: a young ensemble tests identities, makes plans, and fills the hours together. It earns its place for the warmth and ease with which Linklater turns a social world into a story.

BFI’s interview with Linklater connects the film to his recurring interest in youth and group life.

9. Waking Life (2001)

One of Linklater’s most distinctive formal experiments, Waking Life uses rotoscoped animation to give a drifting, philosophical story a look that seems suspended between live action and dream. Its digressive conversations can feel deliberately elusive, but that looseness is part of the design: the movie lets ideas and images wander rather than forcing them into a conventional plot.

#1 Best Overall

The Directors Guild of America identifies Waking Life among Linklater’s rotoscoped animation experiments, a strand of his career that sits far from both his realist romances and studio comedy.

8. School of Rock (2003)

School of Rock demonstrates that Linklater’s conversational, character-led sensibility can work inside a broad studio comedy. Jack Black’s exuberant performance supplies the obvious energy, while the film’s classroom setup gives that energy a group to galvanize. It is one of the director’s most accessible films and a useful reminder that his career cannot be reduced to independent cinema.

The DGA’s overview of Linklater’s work places youth comedies and studio projects alongside his more formally adventurous films.

Saw: 8-Film Collection - DVD
  • Let the games begin! Own the genre-defining Saw horror series in all its grisly glory. Five-disc set includes: Saw (2004), Saw II (2005), Saw III (2006), Saw IV (2007), Saw V (2008), Saw VI (2009), Saw: The Final Chapter (2010) and Saw 3D: The Final Chapter (2010).
  • Genre: Horror

7. A Scanner Darkly (2006)

Linklater’s rotoscoping experiment takes a very different direction here: the animation makes the film’s world feel unstable, an apt form for a story shaped by surveillance and fractured identity. Where Waking Life wanders through ideas, A Scanner Darkly uses its visual strangeness to sharpen a sense of unease. It ranks below the list’s most emotionally immediate work, but its singular style makes it essential to understanding Linklater’s range.

The DGA’s career interview discusses the director’s rotoscoped films as a distinct part of his filmography.

6. Slacker (1990)

Slacker helped establish Linklater’s early independent identity through a loose chain of encounters rather than a conventional central-hero plot. Its attention keeps moving from one person to another, making a city’s passing conversations and marginal figures the subject. That structure asks more patience than the polished romances or comedies, but it captures a key Linklater impulse: people are compelling even when they are not marching toward a tidy story.

Rank #3

The DGA identifies Slacker among the defining early features in Linklater’s career.

5. Before Midnight (2013)

The final film in the Jesse-and-Céline trilogy brings the romance’s long-running attention to conversation into the strain of a lived-in relationship. Its place here depends on the first two films: the characters’ accumulated history gives their disagreements weight. As a standalone entry, it is less welcoming than the trilogy’s beginning; as a conclusion, it is among Linklater’s most searching portraits of intimacy.

The DGA describes the three Before films as a continuing love story spanning two decades. Their order is Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, then Before Midnight.

Rank #4
Harry Potter: Complete 8-film Collection (16-Disc Set / 8-Film Documentary Included) [DVD] [Reg 2/B / Multi-Regional Player Required]
  • COMPLETE 8-FILM COLLECTION – All HarryPotter movies in one set
  • 16-DISC DVD BOX SET – Extensive collection for fans
  • MAGICAL FANTASY SAGA – One of the most beloved franchises
  • REGION B FORMAT – Requires multiregional DVD player
  • COLLECTOR’S EDITION – Perfect for fans and collectors

4. Before Sunset (2004)

Before Sunset takes the chance encounter of the first film and asks what remains years later. Its compact reunion gives the characters’ conversation urgency: every reminiscence, joke, and pause carries the possibility that time has narrowed their choices. It is both a satisfying film in its own right and the trilogy’s most concentrated bridge between youthful possibility and adult consequence.

Watch it after Before Sunrise. The DGA’s account of the trilogy emphasizes how the films’ shared characters and passage of time build on one another.

3. Dazed and Confused (1993)

This ensemble comedy follows the loose rituals, shifting alliances, and small dramas of high-school life without pretending that one character’s story can contain them all. Linklater’s eye for group behavior is already fully visible: the setting matters as much as any individual plot, and the film’s social texture is what lingers. It is one of his most inviting starting points and a defining example of his youth-comedy work.

The BFI recommends Dazed and Confused to viewers beginning to explore Linklater, alongside Before Sunrise.

2. Boyhood (2014)

Boyhood makes time itself part of its form. The film was shot over 12 years, allowing the performers’ real aging to become a visible dimension of its coming-of-age story. Rather than relying on a succession of dramatic milestones, it finds meaning in the gradual accumulation of ordinary experiences. That production approach is an extraordinary formal gamble, and the finished film turns it into an unusually intimate sense of change.

The Directors Guild of America reports that Linklater received the 2014 Berlin International Film Festival’s Silver Bear for Best Director for Boyhood. Its event report on the film records the award; the DGA’s 2018 interview discusses the 12-year filming period.

1. Before Sunrise (1995)

Before Sunrise is Linklater at his most deceptively simple: two strangers meet, walk through a city, and talk. The modest premise gives the film room to become a delicate study of curiosity, attraction, and the feeling that a brief encounter might matter long after it ends. Its dialogue is the action, but the walk and changing surroundings keep the conversation grounded in a particular night.

It ranks first for balancing accessibility with the qualities that define Linklater at his best: attention to how people speak, a willingness to let a relationship unfold in real time, and trust that small moments can carry lasting emotional force. The BFI names Before Sunrise as a place to begin with Linklater, making it the clearest first watch for newcomers.

How to choose your first Linklater film

  • For a welcoming introduction: Start with Before Sunrise for intimate conversation, or Dazed and Confused for an ensemble comedy.
  • For a long-form romance: Watch the Before films in release order: Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, Before Midnight. Their continuing story is most rewarding in sequence.
  • For formal ambition: Choose Boyhood for its 12-year production, or Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly for Linklater’s rotoscoped animation.
  • For his independent beginnings: Try Slacker, then follow it with Dazed and Confused to see his early interest in social groups develop.
  • For a broad comedy: Pick School of Rock.

What this ranking values

No single score can settle which Linklater film is best. The ranking favors movies that combine distinctive form with memorable people and dialogue, while also accounting for their importance within a career that moves between independent film, studio comedy, animation, romance, and coming-of-age drama. Rotten Tomatoes’ current listings show strong critic and audience reception for several titles here, including Before Midnight, Boyhood, Before Sunset, and Dazed and Confused; those platform scores are reception snapshots, not an objective measure of artistic merit. Rotten Tomatoes’ Linklater filmography displays its current scores.
