The ranking below is a June 2024 historical snapshot of the U.S. Netflix catalog. Netflix’s catalog, labels, season counts, and availability vary by country and change over time. “Best” is an editorial judgment based on LGBTQ+ storytelling, representation, genre variety, cultural significance, and the satisfaction of each show’s available run—not an official Netflix or external-industry ranking.
Short answer: If you want one place to start, watch Heartstopper for a tender, hopeful queer coming-of-age romance. For a broader ensemble, choose Sex Education; for a more intense romance, try Young Royals; and for adult drama, start with Feel Good or Orange Is the New Black.

1. Heartstopper
Best for: tender first love, hopeful coming-of-age stories, and viewers looking for a warm entry point.
Adapted from Alice Oseman’s graphic novels, Heartstopper follows Charlie Spring and Nick Nelson as a friendship at an English school gradually becomes something more. Its appeal is not limited to the central romance: the supporting ensemble opens space for gay, bisexual, lesbian, and trans experiences as well as questions about coming out, friendship, family, and belonging.
Heartstopper ranks first because it offers affirmative queer romance without pretending that acceptance solves every problem. It is accessible and often joyful, but it also takes bullying, mental health, eating-disorder struggles, and sexual-assault discussion seriously. Two seasons were available by June 2024; season three had not premiered at the time of this list.
Content note: bullying, mental-health struggles, eating-disorder material, and sexual-assault discussion.
Read it next: If you want to revisit Charlie and Nick’s story beyond the screen, start with Heartstopper: Volume One, the graphic novel behind the series. The book is not required to understand the show, and editions and availability vary.
2. Sex Education
Best for: a large, diverse ensemble; frank conversations about sex and relationships; and comedy that can turn dramatically serious.
Otis’s school sex-therapy clinic provides the premise, but the show’s real strength is its expansive cast. Eric, a gay Black teenager, is central to the series, while the wider story includes queer, questioning, bisexual, lesbian, and trans characters. Sexuality and gender are treated alongside consent, shame, friendship, family, grief, and self-worth rather than as isolated topics.
Netflix had four seasons available in June 2024. The series can be bawdy and deliberately uncomfortable, but its humor makes room for substantial emotional arcs and some of the most wide-ranging mainstream teen representation on this list.
Content note: explicit sexual discussion, bullying, homophobia, sexual assault, grief, and dysphoria-related material.

3. Young Royals
Best for: emotionally intense romance, class conflict, royal pressure, and a relatively short binge.
This Swedish romantic drama follows Prince Wilhelm at the elite Hillerska boarding school and his relationship with Simon. Their intimacy is shaped by the unequal worlds they come from, as well as by public image, family expectations, privacy, and the obligations of royalty.

Where Heartstopper is generally gentle and reassuring, Young Royals is more anxious and emotionally pressurized. Its character-driven romance makes it a strong choice for viewers who want queer teen love with sharper consequences and less certainty. Netflix listed three seasons by the relevant editorial period.
Content note: leaked intimate material, homophobia, grief, substance use, class abuse, and family pressure.
4. Orange Is the New Black
Best for: a long-running, mature ensemble drama about incarceration, power, race, class, and sexuality.
The seven-season series begins when Piper Chapman enters a women’s prison, but it soon becomes a much larger ensemble story. Lesbian, bisexual, trans, and queer characters come from varied racial, economic, and personal backgrounds, and their sexuality is usually one part of a much fuller life.
Orange Is the New Black remains one of Netflix’s most consequential queer-inclusive dramas because it connects personal relationships to institutional power. It is also the most demanding recommendation here: the show examines prison abuse, racism, addiction, violence, and the ways systems can make ordinary survival traumatic.
Content note: sexual violence, prison abuse, racism, addiction, self-harm, death, and traumatic institutional conditions.
5. Feel Good
Best for: adult queer romance, addiction and recovery stories, and sharp, messy dramedy.
Rank #3

- 【MEDIA FORMAT SUPPORT】 - Video: MP4, MKV, AVI, TS/TP, MOV, VOB, and M2TS files using H.265/HEVC, H.264/AVC, VC1, or MPEG2/4 codecs, up to 1920x1080p@60fps, 10-bit color, and 100mbps. Photos: JPG, JPEG, BMP, GIF (non-animated), PNG. Music: MP3, WMA, OGG, FLAC, APE, AAC
Created by and starring Mae Martin, Feel Good follows Mae’s intense relationship with George while Mae navigates sobriety, family history, identity, career, and the difficulty of becoming more honest with oneself. The romance is funny and affectionate, but it is not presented as a cure for addiction, fear, or unresolved personal history.
With two seasons, it is a compact choice for viewers who want an adult story rather than another teen drama. The series is especially good at showing how love, self-knowledge, family trauma, and recovery can complicate one another.
Content note: addiction, relapse, sexual coercion, family trauma, mental-health struggles, and homophobic language.
6. Sense8
Best for: globe-spanning science fiction, queer world-building, action, and stories about chosen family.
The Wachowskis’ science-fiction drama follows eight people who become psychically connected across the world. Its queer representation is woven into the central ensemble adventure, particularly through Nomi and Amanita’s relationship and Lito’s storyline. The show also explores culture, gender, religion, class, sexuality, solidarity, and intimacy across borders.

Sense8 is more overtly adult and episodic than the teen romances above, with an ambitious global scope and a strong emphasis on connection.
Content note: violence, torture, sexual content, drug use, and intense criminal or political threats.
7. Queer Eye
Best for: uplifting reality television, style and design, emotional openness, and stories of everyday self-acceptance.
In each episode, the Fab Five help a person rethink style, grooming, food, home design, and emotional well-being. The format is makeover television, but its strongest moments come from conversations about vulnerability, identity, family, grief, discrimination, and the practical barriers people face in their daily lives.

Subtitles: SRT, PGS, IDX+SUB. Audio: MP3, WMA, FLAC, OGG, AC3, DTS,Dolby and AC3. Photos: JPG, GIF, BMP, PNG, TIF.
It is not a scripted LGBTQ+ drama, yet Queer Eye has been one of Netflix’s most visible vehicles for queer presenters, queer community, and frank emotional expression. It is the best pick on this list when you want something restorative rather than plot-heavy.
Content note: grief, illness, financial hardship, family estrangement, and discussions of identity or discrimination.
8. Special
Best for: a short, sharply written series about disability, sexuality, adulthood, and independence.
Created by and starring Ryan O’Connell, Special follows a young gay man with cerebral palsy as he pursues work, dating, independence, and a more complete understanding of himself. Its short episodes make it easy to sample, but the premise gives the show an intersectional perspective that many LGBTQ+ lists leave out.

The series is interested in self-determination as much as romance. It shows the awkwardness of dating and adulthood while confronting ableism, family conflict, self-esteem, and the pressure to let other people define what a disabled life can be.
Content note: ableism, sexual awkwardness, family conflict, self-esteem issues, and discriminatory behavior.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.9. Glamorous
Best for: campy workplace comedy, beauty-industry glamour, and gender-nonconforming queer representation.
Marco Mejia is an aspiring influencer who gets a job with a makeup mogul and begins a journey involving career ambition, style, romance, family, and self-discovery. Marco’s gender-nonconforming queer identity is not separated from the rest of the character’s life: work, fashion, relationships, and personal ambition all occupy the same story.

This eight-episode fantasy series follows teenage ghosts Edwin Payne and Charles Rowland, who solve supernatural cases with help from a clairvoyant. It is part of the Sandman universe and is based on Neil Gaiman’s comics. Queer identity, intimacy, and romance are embedded in the afterlife mystery rather than treated as a separate issue plot.

Other LGBTQ+ Netflix shows considered
Netflix’s LGBTQ+ and Pride collections also surfaced titles such as Everything Now, Elite, The Haunting of Bly Manor, The Sandman, and Hollywood, along with country-dependent selections. The Boyfriend is not included because Netflix announced that reality series for July 9, 2024. It was not available during the June 2024 window covered by this article.
