The giant Amazon drone-mothership blimp in the viral video is not a real Amazon aircraft: it is CGI created by a Hiroshima-based artist. The concept was inspired by Lockheed Martin’s P-791 hybrid aircraft, while Amazon’s separate interest in delivery drones helped make the fiction seem plausible.
Is the Amazon mothership blimp real?
No. Futurism described the video as “completely fake”: it is computer-generated imagery, not documentary footage of an aircraft built or operated by Amazon. The article does not report that Amazon announced or tested a drone-carrying blimp. Futurism’s April 3, 2019 report is the source for the identification.
Where did the video come from?
Futurism’s Dan Robitzski reported that the video came from a Hiroshima-based artist. The design was inspired by Lockheed Martin’s P-791, a hybrid aircraft. That inspiration helps explain the blimp-like look, but it does not make the depicted Amazon mothership real. The report does not identify an Amazon production team or aircraft program behind the video.
Why did the idea seem believable?
Amazon had separately shown interest in delivery drones. Robitzski noted that CEO Jeff Bezos first teased the idea of delivery drones in 2013. That real-world context may have made a fictional drone carrier seem credible, but it is not evidence that Amazon developed this blimp or a system for launching drones from it. Futurism’s account distinguishes the real drone plans from the fake video.

What the video does—and does not—show
- It shows: a CGI concept created by an artist, with a design inspired by the P-791.
- It does not establish: that Amazon built, announced, tested, or deployed a giant drone-carrying blimp.
Futurism called the clip “making the rounds online,” but its article gives no view, share, or reach count. A precise audience figure should not be inferred from that description.
