Former EFL player Jobi McAnuff said Tranmere Rovers had “that potential” to grow, both on the pitch and commercially. His comments followed reports that rapper A$AP Rocky might be linked to a group interested in investing in the club. They were an assessment of possibility—not confirmation of a deal or a prediction that Tranmere would repeat Wrexham’s story.
What did Jobi McAnuff mean by “that potential”?
In comments published by GOAL on 24 October 2024, McAnuff said: “And I think, when you’re looking at a club like Tranmere, you’d certainly say that potential is very much there.” He was discussing the opportunity investment might create for the club, including greater commercial reach and sporting progress. GOAL’s report placed the remarks in the context of reported interest in Tranmere.

McAnuff’s support was conditional. He said investors should respect the club’s history and keep supporters at the heart of any changes: “As long as they come in, and they take into account, again, all those brilliant historical aspects of those football clubs, and keep the fans at heart, if it’s investment, and it’s going to push the club forward, then why not?”
Was A$AP Rocky buying Tranmere Rovers?
The October 2024 coverage described a reported connection, not a confirmed purchase. On 22 October, BBC Sport reported that Rocky was said to be part of a group led by US lawyer Joe Tacopina. Tranmere chairman Mark Palios did not directly confirm Rocky’s involvement; he said Tacopina was one of several people interested in the business. BBC Sport’s report therefore supports describing Rocky as a possible member of an interested group, not as a confirmed investor or buyer.

Why was Tranmere compared with Wrexham?
The comparison was about what prominent investment and attention might do for a club’s profile and commercial prospects. McAnuff pointed to the attention Wrexham had received as an example of the kind of visibility that can accompany high-profile backing. That is an analogy about possibility, not evidence that Tranmere and Wrexham had equivalent ownership situations or would achieve the same sporting results.
- Investment: Tranmere’s reported discussions were still developing in the coverage cited below; Wrexham was presented as an established example of high-profile ownership.
- Commercial attention: McAnuff suggested prominent names could help a club reach new audiences. His comments were opinion, not a measured estimate of commercial impact.
- Identity and supporters: He made respect for club history and supporters a condition of backing investment.
- Sporting results: The comparison does not establish that Tranmere would match Wrexham’s progress or secure promotion.

| 14 October 2025 | The Guardian reported that nothing had come to fruition by then, while Palios hoped a deal would be completed by Christmas. That was a reported expectation at the time, not proof of a later completion. The Guardian |
What is known about the takeover now?
The reports cited here do not establish whether a sale completed, ended or remained under discussion by 7 October 2026. The 2024 Rocky link and Palios’s reported 2025 expectations should not be treated as current confirmation of a bid or a completed takeover.
