That ’90s Show finds a better balance in Part 2 by letting Leia and her new friends lead more of the story. The return to Point Place is warm and easy company, though the season’s light plotting and surface-level character work keep it from becoming more than a comfortable sitcom watch.

Netflix’s “Season 2” arrived in separately released parts. This review focuses on Part 2, the eight-episode installment listed by Metacritic as released June 27, 2024. Netflix Tudum later announced ten new episodes for Part 3 in an August 23, 2024 article, so this is not a review of the complete season release.
Is That ’90s Show season 2 worth watching?
For viewers looking for relaxed, familiar sitcom comfort, Part 2 is worth a visit. Leia Forman (Callie Haverda) returns to Point Place, Wisconsin, to spend the summer with her grandparents Kitty (Debra Jo Rupp) and Red (Kurtwood Smith), alongside friends Gwen (Ashley Aufderheide), Jay (Mace Coronel), Ozzie (Reyn Doi), Nate (Maxwell Acee Donovan), and Nikki (Sam Morelos). The pleasures are modest but real: the warmth of the Forman home, the returning performances, and a young cast whose ensemble timing grows more assured.
The season’s most consequential improvement is also its clearest structural choice: most of the original young cast stays out of the main action, leaving the new group’s problems room to take focus. In her TheWrap review, Amber Dowling calls this a point where “the series has finally found its groove.” Red and Kitty remain effective anchors, and Dowling singles out the scenes between Red and Bob (Don Stark) as among the stronger moments.

That shift helps the younger ensemble feel less like a pretext for legacy appearances, but it does not make every character or story feel fully formed. The plots often scratch the surface, and Dowling points to weak writing and acting alongside the season’s entertainment value. Part 2 is better at making the group pleasant to spend time with than at giving its characters substantial arcs.
Does season 2 feel like That ’70s Show?
It carries over the original sitcom’s home base and family rhythm, with Red and Kitty supplying a familiar counterweight to teen mischief. But Part 2 is not simply a reunion vehicle: its best direction comes from allowing Leia and her friends to occupy the center. The balance is imperfect, yet the legacy characters work most naturally as supporting presences rather than as the reason every story happens.

The 1990s setting brings recognizable pop-culture references and playful fantasy sequences. These touches can be fun, especially for viewers who remember the decade, but nostalgia does not land equally for everyone; some references may feel more like reminders than jokes. Creator Gregg Mettler told Netflix Tudum that the period also appears in everyday behavior: “The fact that they are not sitting there looking at their phones and they actually have to go over to each other’s houses and hang out makes it the ’90s.” That detail gives the setting a lived-in quality beyond reference spotting.
What works—and what holds it back
The ensemble is more comfortable together
The newer cast has more space to establish its own dynamic, and the timing improves as the episodes progress. That gradual ease matters in a hangout comedy: the group’s chemistry is part of the appeal, even when individual storylines are thin.

The returning adults add warmth
Red and Kitty give the show an emotional and comic center that the teen stories alone do not always sustain. Their presence makes the Forman house feel like a place worth returning to, while Bob’s exchanges with Red provide some of Part 2’s livelier interplay.
Light stories limit the payoff
Part 2 tends to introduce issues without exploring them deeply. Dowling specifically notes that the treatment of racism scratches the surface. The result is an easygoing tone, but also a sense that some material could have supported more meaningful character development.

Nostalgia is a tool, not a substitute
The period details and references can enliven a scene, but they do not automatically supply a distinctive identity. Viewers who enjoy the ’90s cues may get extra pleasure from them; those looking for jokes or stories that stand on their own may find the season less consistent.

Rotten Tomatoes showed an 88% Tomatometer from eight critic reviews and a 71% Popcornmeter from 100+ audience ratings when accessed October 5, 2026; these are dated page snapshots, not permanent scores. The page includes both positive responses and criticism of the show’s emotional depth and substance, so the aggregates do not erase the disagreement.

The small sample on Metacritic reinforces the need for caution: its Part 2 listing shows two critic reviews. Collider’s Arezou Amin describes it as a “charming, funny sitcom all on its own,” while Decider’s Joel Keller is reluctant to recommend it and hopes the teens will blossom now that the legacy cast is less prominent. Two visible reviews are not enough to represent a broad critical consensus.
