These are the character’s 10 best moments, ranked editorially. “Best” here means the scenes that most effectively reveal Thanos, advance the season’s conflicts, or show why his short arc remains so memorable—not necessarily the moments in which he behaves best.
What makes Thanos work?
Thanos enters the game after losing money in cryptocurrency and watching his already-failing rap career decline. He wants to project the image of an untouchable star, but the performance conceals an anxious, frightened person. Choi Seung-hyun has described Thanos as nervous and easily scared when sober, while drugs make him disconnected, reckless, and unpredictable.
That distinction is central to the character. Thanos is not consistently fearless; he is often a frightened man trying to make fear look entertaining. His purple hair references Marvel’s Thanos, while his nail colors represent the Infinity Stones and also evoke Skittles. The design makes him look like a walking pop-culture joke, but the performance gives the joke an increasingly ugly edge.
1. The blissed-out grin during Red Light, Green Light
Thanos’ first major showcase comes during the opening game. As the other players panic and bodies fall around them, he advances with a conspicuous grin. Rather than treating Red Light, Green Light as a terrifying test of survival, he behaves as though he has been handed a stage.

He takes drugs, uses the movement of other contestants to knock players down, and seems energized by the surrounding chaos. The smile is more revealing than any introduction could be: Thanos is selfish, theatrical, and chemically detached from the reality of what is happening.
Why it ranks first: The scene establishes his entire worldview in one image. The game is not simply something he must survive. It is an opportunity to perform, dominate attention, and turn violence into spectacle.
2. His first intimidation of the other players
Thanos does not need formal authority to control the dormitory. He uses his rapper persona, flamboyant appearance, flirtation, threats, and erratic mood to make himself impossible to ignore. One moment he can be joking or affectionate; the next, he can become aggressive without warning.
That unpredictability gives him social leverage. The other players cannot reliably tell whether he will make a threat, start a fight, or turn the interaction into a joke. His actual judgment is poor, but his willingness to behave irrationally makes people cautious around him.
Why it matters: This is the foundation of Thanos’ influence. He is not a strategist in the traditional sense, and he does not inspire genuine loyalty. He controls attention by making every encounter feel unstable.

3. The “Infinity Stones” nail-polish exchange with Se-mi
Before the Six-Legged Pentathlon, Se-mi notices Thanos’ multicolored nails and asks whether he has collected all the Infinity Stones. Thanos proudly confirms that he has.
The exchange is a small joke, but it explains a great deal about his visual identity. The Marvel reference is not merely hidden in the costume; Thanos himself understands and embraces the comparison. He wants to be seen as colorful, powerful, and larger than life, even though his behavior repeatedly exposes how insecure and immature he is.
The scene also gives Se-mi and Thanos a brief moment of connection. She is willing to engage with his absurdity before their relationship becomes more hostile and exploitative.
Why it ranks highly: It is the most efficient explanation of Thanos’ aesthetic: pop-culture-inspired, self-mythologizing, childish, and deliberately over-the-top.
4. Building his unstable crew
Thanos gathers Nam-gyu, Min-su, Se-mi, and Gyeong-su into an unusual group. It looks like an alliance, but it is not built on trust, shared values, or mutual respect. The weaker or more uncertain players orbit him because his presence can offer protection—or at least the appearance of protection—in the dormitory.
Thanos holds the group together through intimidation, opportunism, and force of personality. He does not treat its members as equals. Their value to him changes according to what he wants at a given moment, which becomes especially clear when the group enters the later games.

Why it matters: The crew turns Thanos from an isolated comic-relief villain into a force that reorganizes the social structure of the dormitory. His personal behavior feeds directly into the season’s broader factional conflict.
5. His chaotic presence in the Six-Legged Pentathlon
The Six-Legged Pentathlon replaces the expected dalgona challenge with a five-person relay. Teams must complete five traditional Korean mini-games: ddakji, flying stone, gong-gi, spinning top, and jegi.
Thanos’ team survives the round, giving him a chance to display his physicality and drug-fueled bravado. He turns a children’s contest into another performance, bringing the same exaggerated energy to each task that he brings to the dormitory. His contribution is not evidence that he has suddenly become dependable; he is most effective when the objective is immediate, concrete, and directly connected to his own survival.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute6. Dancing through Mingle
Mingle places the players on a rotating carousel and repeatedly demands groups of an exact size. When the carousel stops, contestants must form the required group and reach a room before time expires. Anyone left outside, or anyone in the wrong-sized group, is eliminated.
Thanos’ dancing around the carousel makes him one of the round’s most memorable figures. His movements suggest that he is at a party or filming a music video rather than participating in a lethal contest. The image is funny, but the joke depends on an awful contrast: every missed group means that someone dies.
Why it matters: Mingle captures the tonal contradiction that defines Thanos. His energy is entertaining because it is so inappropriate, and it is disturbing for exactly the same reason. He refuses to acknowledge the seriousness of the situation until his own position is threatened.
7. Kicking Gyeong-su out—and immediately forgetting him
During Mingle, Thanos abruptly excludes Gyeong-su from his group. Shortly afterward, he appears confused about where Gyeong-su has gone. The incident is not just another example of intoxicated disorganization; it reveals what Thanos’ so-called friendships mean to him.
When he needs another person, that person is part of his crew. When circumstances change, the same person becomes disposable. Thanos can then lose track of the discarded player as though the relationship had barely existed.
Why it ranks here: This is the moment when his charisma becomes unmistakably cruel. His followers are not companions. They are interchangeable pieces that he may abandon and then fail to remember.
8. Targeting Min-su and threatening Myung-gi
After Mingle, Thanos pressures Min-su and confronts Myung-gi. The tension is connected to the players’ opposing positions over whether the games should continue. What might have remained a political disagreement becomes personal intimidation, particularly because Min-su is physically and socially vulnerable.
Thanos uses fear to enforce his preferred side of the conflict. He does not persuade people through evidence or principled argument; he makes disagreement feel dangerous. His treatment of Min-su also exposes the hollowness of his earlier claims to protect members of his crew.

- Game for Hours in Comfort. Everything about these headphones is about comfort: The deluxe lightweight leatherette ear cups and headband are made to keep pressure off your ears. Ear cups rotate up to 90 degrees for convenience.
Why it matters: This is where Thanos’ individual cruelty becomes a mechanism for the season’s larger plot. His threats help turn the X-versus-O voting divide into open factional violence.
9. The bathroom fight and his sudden death
Thanos initiates a confrontation in the bathroom after Mingle. When Myung-gi intervenes to protect Min-su, the encounter escalates into a fight. Myung-gi eventually uses a dinner fork to stab Thanos in the throat, killing him.
The death is startling because Thanos seems too loud and too central to disappear without a grand farewell. He does not receive a ceremonial exit, a final speech, or a dramatic elimination in one of the official games. His own aggression creates the opening for his death, and the weapon is as improvised and ordinary as the situation is chaotic.
The violence does not end with Thanos. The bathroom confrontation expands into a broader brawl that kills additional players, making his death the immediate trigger for another burst of bloodshed.
Why it ranks here: Thanos’ sudden death completes the pattern of his arc. He spends the season treating violence as entertainment and social dominance as a game, only to be destroyed by the uncontrolled violence he helped create.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.10. His death becoming a political weapon
Although Player 230 is gone, Thanos continues to affect the game. Nam-gyu returns to the dormitory and presents the bathroom deaths as an attack by the opposing faction. The account intensifies the hostility between the X and O players and helps trigger the later lights-out massacre.
Thanos therefore remains influential after death, not as a mastermind but as a symbol. His alliances, his aggression, and the circumstances of his killing are repurposed by people who want to justify retaliation. The character’s reputation becomes more useful to the surviving players than the truth of what happened.
Why it belongs in the top ten: His final important moment is indirect. Thanos’ Season 2 arc ends in the bathroom, but the consequences of his behavior continue shaping the season’s political and violent aftermath.

Thanos works because he is simultaneously comic, threatening, pathetic, and visually controlled. The purple hair and Infinity-Stones nails make him instantly legible as a pop-culture riff, but Choi Seung-hyun’s performance prevents him from becoming a simple joke.

Under the swagger is an anxious man who has lost control of his life and tries to replace competence with spectacle. The drugs do not create an entirely different person; as Choi’s characterization suggests, they strip away restraint and amplify Thanos’ existing impulses. His confidence becomes recklessness, his humor becomes cruelty, and his desire for attention becomes a willingness to endanger everyone around him.
His arc also shows how Squid Game turns entertainment into violence. Thanos dances during Mingle, jokes about his appearance, performs rapper-like bravado, and treats the dormitory as a stage. The show repeatedly places those entertaining gestures beside betrayal, coercion, and death.
That is why the bathroom scene lands so effectively. The character who seems designed for a spectacular elimination is not granted one. He is killed abruptly by the social violence he helped unleash, and then his death is converted into propaganda by the people left behind.
