Tessarion is Prince Daeron Targaryen’s dragon, known in Fire & Blood as the Blue Queen. She appears only briefly in the season 2 finale, flying with Daeron and the Hightower forces—a glimpse that signals they are joining the war, not a full introduction or a battle scene.
Who is Tessarion?
Tessarion belongs to Daeron Targaryen, the youngest son of Alicent Hightower and King Viserys. In the books, she is called the Blue Queen. The television series is based on George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, but the finale’s short image does not establish all of the book’s details on screen. HBO’s season 2 announcement identifies Fire & Blood as the series’ source.
What happens when Tessarion appears in season 2?
Tessarion is glimpsed in episode 8, “The Queen Who Ever Was,” flying with Daeron and the Hightower army. The moment establishes that Daeron and his dragon are joining the forces gathering for the conflict. It is brief: the episode does not give Tessarion an extended introduction or show her fighting.
Daeron had not previously appeared onscreen during the season. CNN Brasil’s finale coverage describes him as Alicent and Viserys’s fourth child, raised away from court, and reports showrunner Ryan Condal’s explanation that Alicent’s fourth son and his dragon are flying to join the Hightower army. CNN Brasil’s account of the finale quotes Condal in Portuguese: “O quarto filho de Alicent e seu dragão, a Rainha Azul, estão voando para se juntar a esse gigantesco exército formado pelos Hightower.”

Why is she called the Blue Queen?
The name comes with a vivid color description in Fire & Blood. George R. R. Martin describes Tessarion this way: “Prince Daeron’s dragon was Tessarion, with her wings dark as cobalt and her claws and crest and belly scales as bright as beaten copper.” That blue-and-copper palette explains the familiar depiction of the Blue Queen; it is a book description, not a level of detail established by the finale’s brief shot. The Ringer’s dragon guide reproduces the passage.
What the brief glimpse does—and does not—tell viewers
- Established in the show: Tessarion is shown with Daeron as they fly with the Hightower forces.
- Established in the book: Tessarion is Daeron’s dragon and is known as the Blue Queen; Fire & Blood supplies the cobalt-and-copper description.
- Not established by this scene: a detailed account of Tessarion’s size, age, or capabilities. A separate dragon guide describes her as young and of fighting size, but the sources do not give a primary-source measurement. Marie Claire’s dragon guide provides further adaptation context.
For more detail about Tessarion’s appearance and place in the story, Fire & Blood is the source text; it is optional background rather than necessary context for understanding the finale’s short appearance.
