Why Sabu became a symbol of ECW’s hardcore style
WWE remembered Sabu as an ECW hardcore wrestling pioneer, particularly associated with high-risk use of chairs, tables and barbed wire in the ring. That reputation made his matches stand apart: the objects and danger were central to the physical spectacle, not incidental details.
Brunk was also part of a wrestling family: WWE’s official profile identifies him as the nephew of The Sheik. Sabu’s ECW legacy is the foundation of his public identity, while his later WWE run brought him into a larger mainstream spotlight.

His WWE run brought Sabu to WrestleMania 23
Sabu signed with WWE in 2006 as the company revived ECW. WWE’s remembrance highlighted matches against Rey Mysterio and John Cena, two of the era’s most prominent stars. At WrestleMania 23, he appeared alongside fellow ECW Originals The Sandman, Tommy Dreamer and Rob Van Dam. WWE’s retrospective put attendance at more than 80,000 fans.
The run was brief: WWE’s profile records that Sabu left the company in May 2007. On May 12, 2025, WWE also published a career remembrance video, publicly marking his death.
