Garr was known for precise comic timing and for making supporting roles vivid. Her turn as Inga in Mel Brooks’s Young Frankenstein (1974) established her as a comic performer, according to the Associated Press. In Tootsie (1982), she played Sandy, an actress and friend of Dustin Hoffman’s character. The roles showcased a performer who could make a scene funny without losing the character’s humanity.

Garr’s path to those parts was gradual. She began in dance and chorus work, then built a film and television career through supporting performances. The AP obituary describes The Conversation (1974) as her major film break; that same year, Young Frankenstein helped define her comic screen persona.

Writer-director Paul Feig, quoted by the AP, called Garr “truly one of my comedy heroes. I couldn’t have loved her more”. Her work left a particular mark in comedy, but her long career also encompassed dance, drama, science fiction and television.
