Spoilers for the Tell Me Lies series finale. The finale reveals that Bree—not Stephen—released Lucy’s confession tape. It’s a sharp reversal: Lucy and the group had blamed Stephen, whose earlier coercion made that assumption believable. The reveal shifts the question from whether Stephen is dangerous to how harm travels through the group—and who chooses to use it.
Who released Lucy’s tape in the Tell Me Lies finale?
Bree released it. After learning that Lucy had slept with Evan, Bree made the tape public; Lucy and the others had believed Stephen was responsible. TIME’s finale account and TV Insider’s coverage of the reveal both identify Bree as the person who released it.
That changes who committed this particular act, not what Stephen had already done. In season 3, Lucy records a confession that she lied about being sexually assaulted by Chris. Chris had assaulted Pippa; the confession concerns Lucy’s lie about her own assault, not Pippa’s experience. TIME reports that Stephen persuaded Lucy to record it and used the tape as blackmail. He later returned it, leading Lucy to think the immediate threat was over.
Why does the reveal make Bree seem more dangerous than Stephen?
The reversal puts two different kinds of danger side by side. Stephen’s leverage over Lucy is calculated: he pressures her into creating damaging evidence and keeps it as a means of control. Bree’s action is retaliatory: the finale links her release of the tape to what she learns about Lucy and Evan. In this moment, Bree turns private material into public harm.

That does not establish that Bree is universally worse than Stephen. It shows that the capacity to hurt someone is not confined to the person the group already fears. Stephen’s history makes him an obvious suspect; Bree’s act exposes the cost of treating that suspicion as a complete explanation.
What the tape changes—and what it doesn’t
- It changes the attribution. Bree, rather than Stephen, released the tape.
- It does not erase Stephen’s coercion. He still pressured Lucy to record the confession and used it as blackmail.
- It widens the fallout. The harm is not limited to Lucy and Stephen’s relationship; it reaches the friends whose trust and loyalties are already strained.
The distinction matters because the series does not need a simple ranking of villains for the reveal to land. The tape becomes a test of how quickly the group assigns blame, how much damage one person can do with another’s secrets, and how intimate betrayals ripple outward.

How the finale frames Lucy’s choice
Showrunner Meaghan Oppenheimer told the Los Angeles Times that Lucy’s choice of Stephen over her friends should cost her those friendships. Oppenheimer also said, “I don’t think this is a love story.” That is her description of the show’s intent, not a clinical judgment about the characters. The ending treats Lucy’s decision as one with consequences rather than as proof that the relationship is romantic destiny.
Season 3 is the series finale. Disney+ describes the season as carrying the fallout of earlier choices into spring semester at Baird College, and its series guide lists eight episodes. The television adaptation is based on Carola Lovering’s novel, Tell Me Lies.
