Forbes estimated Ted Turner’s net worth at about $2.8 billion. Its 2026 estimate is dated March 10, and the Associated Press described the figure as his wealth at the time of his death on May 6, 2026, aged 87. It is a published estimate—not a verified valuation of his estate or the amount his family inherited.
What does the $2.8 billion estimate mean?
Forbes’ profile lists Turner at $2.8 billion in its 2026 billionaire rankings, with an estimate date of March 10, 2026. The AP obituary, published after his death, reported that Forbes put his wealth at about $2.8 billion at the time he died. Those descriptions should be read together: the figure is Forbes’ estimate dated before his death, while AP uses it to describe his wealth at that time. Forbes’ Ted Turner profile and the AP obituary do not establish a new calculation made on May 6.

A net-worth estimate is not the same as an estate inventory. The sources reporting the $2.8 billion figure do not provide a final accounting of assets and liabilities, a probate valuation, or a breakdown of what was distributed. Turner Enterprises’ announcement identified five surviving children and said the family requested privacy; it did not disclose inheritance shares or estate terms. Turner Enterprises’ announcement therefore offers no basis for saying each heir received a particular amount—or that the family received $2.8 billion.
How did Ted Turner build his fortune?
From an Atlanta station to a cable network
Turner entered television in 1970, when he acquired Atlanta independent UHF station Channel 17. He bought the Atlanta Braves and launched the TBS Superstation in 1976, expanding the reach of his television business beyond a single local station. Turner Enterprises’ biography of Turner traces those milestones and the later growth of his media holdings.

CNN and the Time Warner deal
Turner launched CNN in 1980. Turner Enterprises describes it as the world’s first live, 24-hour global news network. Turner Broadcasting merged with Time Warner in October 1996; Forbes says Turner sold the company for $7.3 billion in stock and identifies cable television as his source of wealth. The $7.3 billion was the reported value of that transaction, not a measure of Turner’s personal net worth. Forbes’ profile provides the transaction figure and source-of-wealth description.
His fortune later changed with the value of his Time Warner holdings. The AP reported that it shrank after the AOL-Time Warner merger as the company’s shares fell. The Washington Post recalled that Turner’s wealth had once reached about $9 billion when he was Time Warner’s largest individual shareholder. That historical high is a different point in time and measure from Forbes’ 2026 estimate. The Washington Post obituary describes the earlier peak.

Turner’s business wealth existed alongside substantial philanthropy and land conservation. In 1997 he pledged up to $1 billion to the United Nations and created the United Nations Foundation the following year. The AP describes the pledge as $100 million a year for ten years and reports that he fulfilled it. Turner Enterprises’ biography and the AP obituary recount the pledge.
Turner Enterprises’ family announcement also said he had donated more than $1 billion and preserved more than two million acres of land. These facts give context to his life and work, but they do not independently verify the $2.8 billion estimate. The acreage is not a monetary valuation, and the published net-worth figure should not be recalculated by subtracting charitable gifts.
