Ted Danson said working with his wife, Mary Steenburgen, on season 2 of A Man on the Inside was a joyful experience: the pair spent about two and a half months working together, and he recalled “giggling the whole time.” Steenburgen joined the Netflix series as Mona Margadoff, opposite Danson’s Charles Nieuwendyk.
What did Ted Danson say about working with Mary Steenburgen?
In a PEOPLE interview excerpt syndicated by AOL, Danson described the collaboration as both a professional pleasure and a chance to spend time together. “We both love being actors; we both love the process. So we spent two and a half months together getting up, going to work early but just giggling the whole time because of what we got to say and do. It was just really a great opportunity.”

The two-and-a-half-month figure is Danson’s recollection in the interview, not an independently measured production schedule. His explanation makes clear that the laughter was tied to enjoying the scripts and the work they got to do together.
Why did Mary Steenburgen join A Man on the Inside?
Steenburgen said she had heard Danson come home talking enthusiastically about The Good Place and the first season of A Man on the Inside, especially the scripts and the cast and crew. She said she had felt a little envious of the experience, so being invited into the second season was thrilling.

“I felt so honored and lucky every single day,” Steenburgen said. Danson recalled learning about her casting moments before she did and called the opportunity to work together a dream come true. These comments and the production anecdotes below come from the PEOPLE interview excerpt syndicated by AOL; Netflix’s show materials provide separate context about the characters and story.
Who do Danson and Steenburgen play?
Danson plays Charles Nieuwendyk, while Steenburgen plays Mona Margadoff, a former rock star who becomes a music professor and advocates for Wheeler College’s music department and students. Netflix Tudum’s November 21, 2025 feature describes Charles meeting Mona as he investigates a case at the college. The season pairs their characters in a later-in-life romance within that Wheeler College storyline.
