The “kids picked last in gym class” in this headline were technology executives and venture capitalists, not children playing football. The phrase came from Menlo Ventures investor Venky Ganesan, who used it to poke fun at wealthy tech figures attending Super Bowl LX, played at Levi’s Stadium in February 2026.
What “picked last in gym class” means
TechCrunch attributed the line to Ganesan, a longtime venture capitalist at Menlo Ventures, speaking to The New York Times. As TechCrunch reproduced it, he described “tech billionaires who got picked last in gym class paying $50,000 to pretend they’re friends with the guys who got picked first.” He added, “And for the record, I, too, was picked last in gym class.” The joke contrasts the wealth and access of technology executives with the social status traditionally associated with star athletes; it is a quip, not a claim about executives’ actual childhoods.
The remark appeared in Connie Loizos’s February 7, 2026, TechCrunch account of tech-industry figures around Super Bowl LX. TechCrunch attributed the quotation to the Times; the original Times story is not independently confirmed here.
What the ticket figures actually measured
Ticket prices varied by seller and time. A reported average purchase price is not the same as the cheapest available listing, nor does a single pregame snapshot establish what every fan paid.

TechCrunch also reported an “almost $7,000” average ticket price and said roughly one quarter of tickets went to the general public, attributing those figures to the Times. They should be understood as figures reported by TechCrunch, not independently confirmed here.

The executives’ presence was one side of the technology industry’s visibility around the game. TechCrunch reported that Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, Amazon, and Meta were running competing AI advertisements. The game therefore served not only as a gathering point for prominent technology figures, but also as a high-profile stage for companies promoting artificial-intelligence products.
