Yes. Diane Lane later acknowledged dating Jon Bon Jovi in the 1980s, but she said her memory of the relationship was fuzzy. A dramatic account of their breakup comes from a former Bon Jovi tour manager’s book and is not independently confirmed by the sources cited here. Nor do those sources establish that Bon Jovi’s “You Give Love a Bad Name” was written about Lane.

A 2017 Bravo program listing characterizes it as a months-long relationship that took place when Lane was 20. That is the listing’s description, not a detailed transcript or a fully corroborated timeline. The available accounts support the broad outline—Lane and Bon Jovi dated and later split—but not a precise start or end date.
Why did Diane Lane and Jon Bon Jovi break up?

That explanation should be treated as an attributed allegation, not an established account of what happened: the cited coverage does not independently verify it. Lane responded with skepticism about the story’s source, saying, “Some people will just try and sell a book, and I can’t blame them.”
Was “You Give Love a Bad Name” about Diane Lane?
The sources cited here do not substantiate a connection between Lane and the song. In a 2024 PBS NewsHour interview, Bon Jovi described “You Give Love a Bad Name” as the first single from Slippery When Wet because it sounded like a radio hit. He did not connect the song to Lane in that interview.

The Bon Jovi official album archive credits the song to Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora, and Desmond Child. It also recounts Child’s memory of the three songwriters developing the lyric together. Neither the interview nor the archive says Lane inspired the song. The careful conclusion is that the alleged connection is unsubstantiated by these sources—not that they prove it false.

Slippery When Wet was released in 1986, according to the band’s official archive. Bon Jovi’s PBS interview gives a direct account of why “You Give Love a Bad Name” was chosen as the album’s first single: its sound seemed to match what was on the radio. That is the documented context in these sources, distinct from speculation about Lane’s role.
