Taylor Swift announced The Tortured Poets Department at the Grammy Awards on February 4, 2024, and named April 19, 2024, as its release date. The album arrived that day as a 16-track standard edition; Swift also surprised listeners with The Anthology, which added 15 tracks.
February 4, 2024: Swift announces the album at the Grammys
While accepting Best Pop Vocal Album for Midnights at the 66th Grammy Awards, Swift announced her new album and its April 19 release date. The Associated Press reported her words the next day: “My brand-new album comes out April 19. It’s called ‘The Tortured Poets Department.’” The Associated Press’s February 5 report describes it as her eleventh studio album.
February 5–6: Track details and Japan-market preorders
February 5: The initial track count
In its February 5 coverage, the Associated Press reported that the album would contain 16 tracks, with some editions offering “The Manuscript” as a bonus track. This was the pre-release plan for the standard album—not the final count for every version listeners would encounter on April 19.
February 6: Physical formats listed in Japan
Universal Music Japan announced that preorders had begun in its store for deluxe CD, CD, vinyl, and cassette editions. Each listing included “The Manuscript” as a bonus track. The deluxe CD offer was limited through February 8 at 11 a.m. Japan time, or until the planned quantity sold out, whichever came first. These were Japan-market preorder terms, not a statement of worldwide availability or an offer that remains open. Universal Music Japan’s February 6 announcement gives the format and offer details.

April 19: The 16-track album and surprise Anthology
The standard release
The Tortured Poets Department was released on April 19, 2024, with 16 tracks on the standard edition, as reported by the Recording Academy’s release-day track-listing article.
The expanded version
On release day, Swift also issued The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology, a surprise expansion containing 15 additional songs. Together with the standard album, that made a 31-track expanded version. The 15 tracks were not part of the original February announcement’s 16-track plan; they were revealed as a release-day addition.

What followed: Later editions in 2024
The original timetable should be kept separate from the album’s later edition history. The editions listing records subsequent digital versions with live performances or alternate versions, as well as a physical The Anthology edition dated November 29, 2024. Edition-specific bonus tracks differ, so a format name alone does not establish that every release has identical content. See the album editions listing for the later versions.

Release-day records reported by platforms and charts
- Spotify: Spotify said the album passed 300 million streams in a single day on April 19, 2024, becoming the first album in its history to reach that threshold. This is a Spotify-reported service record, not an independently audited global listening total. Spotify also said “Fortnight” became the most-streamed song in a single day in Spotify history. Spotify’s release-day report describes both records.
- UK chart performance: Official Charts reported that the album had the biggest opening week of any Taylor Swift album in the UK, based on Official Charts data. That claim is specific to the UK and should not be read as a global record. Official Charts’ album page covers the record.
