Taylor Swift’s The Life of a Showgirl opened with 4.002 million U.S. equivalent album units for the October 3–9, 2025 tracking week, the largest first-week total of the Luminate era, which began in 1991. That figure combines purchases and streaming equivalents; it does not mean 4.002 million physical copies were sold.
What the 4.002 million figure counts
Guinness World Records reported the first-week U.S. total as 4.002 million equivalent album units, drawing on Billboard chart reporting and Luminate data. It comprises traditional album sales and streaming-equivalent albums, which are distinct measures of listening and purchasing.
| Measure | First-week U.S. figure | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Equivalent album units | 4.002 million | Combined chart total of traditional sales and streaming-equivalent albums; Guinness World Records describes it as the largest since the Luminate tracking era began in 1991. |
| Traditional album sales | 3,479,500 | Physical and digital album purchases; Guinness says this was the largest traditional-sales week in the Luminate era. |
| Streaming-equivalent albums | 522,600 | Units derived from listening, not additional purchased albums. |
| On-demand official streams | 680.9 million | The streams Guinness World Records says corresponded to the streaming-equivalent album total. |
| Vinyl copies | 1.334 million | First-week U.S. vinyl sales; Guinness calls it the fastest-selling vinyl album on the Billboard 200 in the Luminate era and the first album to sell one million vinyl copies in a week. |
These figures describe overlapping parts of the chart picture, not totals to add together: vinyl purchases are included in traditional sales, while streaming-equivalent albums are calculated from streams.
How the record compares with Adele’s 25
Adele’s 25 had held the previous U.S. first-week record, with 3.378 million copies in 2015, according to the Associated Press. The comparison needs a measurement caveat: the widely cited 4.002 million for Swift is equivalent album units, whereas the reported traditional-sales portion was 3,479,500. The figures are not identical categories, even though the new chart total surpassed the old record.

The U.S. chart result and the global announcement
The Life of a Showgirl debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 dated October 18, 2025. Separately, Universal Music Canada announced on October 14 that the album had more than 5.5 million global album-equivalent units in its first week. That label announcement is a worldwide figure; it should not be substituted for or added to the U.S. chart total.

The results establish an unusually large first week across purchases and streaming, as well as a vinyl sales record. They do not establish how many sales came from any particular edition, color, retailer, or exclusive. Nor do the totals explain why listeners bought or streamed the album. Universal Music Canada’s announcement quotes Swift reflecting on the scale of her career: “I’ll never forget how excited I was in 2006 when my first album sold 40,000 copies in its first week.”
