Why did Swift and her group appear to celebrate?
TheWrap reported on January 27, 2014, that Swift and people with her “prematurely jumped for joy” when the announcement began with a sound they associated with Red. The sound at the start of “Random Access Memories” could be heard as the title “Red” in the anticipation of the moment. E!’s same-day account also described Swift and her team standing with shocked expressions before Swift smiled and applauded the winners. These are contemporaneous descriptions of a brief visible reaction, not proof of what Swift or anyone around her privately believed or felt. (TheWrap; E!)
What happened after the winner was announced?
Once Daft Punk’s win was clear, Swift applauded, according to both reports. The Recording Academy’s retrospective says collaborator Paul Williams delivered the duo’s acceptance message. It also recounts that Daft Punk asked Williams to acknowledge Macklemore, Ryan Lewis, and Mary Lambert for “Same Love.” Williams said: “It was the height of fairness and the power of love for all people at any time, in any combination.” (Recording Academy)

What the moment does—and does not—show
The clip-worthy moment is best understood as an apparent split-second misreading of an announcement, followed by Swift’s applause for the actual winners. Calling it “awkward” is an interpretation of the footage, not an independently established fact; the available reporting supports describing what people appeared to do, not assigning resentment or a definite motive.
