Taylor Swift’s lawyers sent University of Central Florida student Jack Sweeney a cease-and-desist letter in December 2023, demanding that he stop publishing information about her private-jet flights. The dispute became public in February 2024. Swift’s representatives described the posts as a safety risk; Sweeney’s side said the flight data was public and the accounts were protected speech. The cited coverage documents the opposing claims and account takedowns, not a court ruling deciding who was right.
What the cease-and-desist letter demanded
TIME reported that a letter from Venable LLP lawyer Katie Morrone was dated December 22, 2023. It identified Sweeney as the operator of accounts including @taylorswiftjets and demanded that he stop publishing flight information and remove existing posts. The letter warned that Swift would escalate legal action if he did not comply. The letter was a legal demand, not a lawsuit or a court order.
In the letter, Morrone argued that live destination and arrival updates could expose Swift to danger. She wrote that the accounts “essentially provide individuals intent on physically harming her, or with nefarious or violent intentions, a roadmap to carry out their plans.” That was the allegation made by Swift’s lawyer, not a finding by a court.
How Sweeney and his lawyer responded
Sweeney told the Associated Press that he did not intend to harm Swift and argued that people should expect aircraft to be tracked when the information is public. He said: “One should reasonably expect that their jet will be tracked, whether or not I’m the one doing it, as it is public information after all.”

In February 2024, Sweeney’s lawyer, Ethan Jacobs, responded that the account was protected speech and did not violate Swift’s legal rights. Jacobs wrote that “the @taylorswiftjets account is engaged in protected speech that does not violate any of Ms. Swift’s legal rights.” That was Sweeney’s lawyer’s position, not a judicial decision.
Where the flight information came from
The Associated Press clarified that Sweeney’s setup used aircraft information broadcast through Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast (ADS-B), rather than data obtained directly from the Federal Aviation Administration. AP describes aircraft as broadcasting this information and notes that the broadcasts are federally required; hobbyists collect them to track aircraft. Saying that the posts used “FAA data” can therefore blur an important distinction: the reported source was aircraft broadcasts, not a feed supplied directly by the FAA.

What is known about the safety allegation
Swift’s spokesperson said the timing of stalkers suggested a connection to Sweeney’s websites. The Associated Press reported that the spokesperson did not answer questions about whether stalkers had waited at an airport or how they might have inferred Swift’s later location from an arrival time. The cited reporting records the allegation but does not establish that Sweeney’s posts caused a particular stalking incident.
What happened to the accounts—and what the reports do not establish
Sweeney said Meta had taken down the accounts on Instagram and Threads. Contemporaneous coverage also described a separate X account that posted flight information with a 24-hour delay. These are reports about the accounts’ status in 2024, not confirmation of their present status.

The reporting cited here documents the December demand letter, Sweeney’s lawyer’s response, and the reported takedowns. It does not report a court judgment resolving the competing legal claims. A cease-and-desist letter shows that one side demanded a change; by itself, it does not prove that the demand is legally valid or that the recipient has been found liable.

TIME reported that a 2022 estimate by Yard ranked Swift first among celebrities for estimated carbon-dioxide emissions, at 1,100 times the average person’s emissions. That figure is Yard’s third-party estimate, not an official measurement. TIME also reported Swift’s spokesperson’s statements that her plane was loaned out regularly and that she had purchased more than double the carbon credits needed to offset tour travel. Those statements are the spokesperson’s claims, distinct from Yard’s estimate.
