The public dispute began with Kanye West interrupting Taylor Swift at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, appeared to thaw when Swift presented him with an award in 2015, and flared again over West’s 2016 song “Famous” and a recorded phone call. The central disagreement was not simply whether Swift and West discussed a lyric: it was whether what she heard on the call amounted to approving the finished song. Here is how the conflict unfolded, separating public statements from interpretations of lyrics and motives.

How did the dispute begin?

September 2009: West interrupts Swift at the VMAs

Swift had just won Best Female Video for “You Belong With Me” at the MTV Video Music Awards when West took the microphone and argued that Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)” should have won. Beyoncé later invited Swift to finish her speech after Beyoncé won Video of the Year. West apologized publicly soon afterward. On The Jay Leno Show that September, as quoted by TIME, he said: “It was rude, period. I don’t try to justify it, ’cause I was in the wrong.”

November 2009 and September 2010: the incident returns to the stage

Swift referred to the interruption in her Saturday Night Live monologue. A year after the incident, she debuted “Innocent” at the VMAs. Some coverage read the song as addressing the controversy, but that is an interpretation rather than a confirmed account of her intent.

2010: West reopens the argument

In later interviews, West defended his actions and claimed the interruption had benefited Swift’s career. That position sat uneasily beside his earlier apology, making the apparent resolution less settled.

Did Swift and West reconcile before “Famous”?

August 2015: a public thaw

Swift presented West with the Video Vanguard Award at the VMAs. Retrospective coverage describes the moment as a public thaw, though it did not settle the history between them.

What did “Famous” change in 2016?

February: West releases the song

West’s “Famous” named Swift and included a lyric claiming credit for her fame, using a degrading term. Swift’s representatives objected to the wording. West’s camp maintained that she had approved it. The dispute therefore turned on what she had been told—and what, if anything, she had agreed to—not merely on whether the two had spoken.

February: Swift speaks at the Grammys

While accepting Album of the Year, Swift warned young women about people who try to undermine their success or claim credit for their accomplishments. Contemporary coverage widely placed the speech in the context of the renewed dispute. The speech itself did not establish a private target, so the connection should be understood as reporting rather than a stated identification.

June: Kardashian discusses the call; the video depicts a wax figure

In a GQ interview, Kim Kardashian said Swift had “totally approved” the lyric and said a recorded call existed. That month, West’s “Famous” video showed naked wax likenesses of Swift and other public figures. The video’s presentation drew interpretation, but its images alone do not establish the private intentions of the people involved.

What happened with the leaked phone call?

July 2016: Kardashian releases excerpts

Kardashian posted excerpts of a West–Swift call on Snapchat. The clips included discussion of a lyric about West and Swift having sex. They were excerpts, not the complete call. Swift’s response was that she had not been told about the degrading wording and had neither heard nor approved the finished song. As Biography.com quoted her, she said: “I would very much like to be excluded from this narrative, one that I have never asked to be a part of, since 2009.”

Swift also addressed the difference between discussing a lyric and approving a released track. Us Weekly quoted her: “While I wanted to be supportive of Kanye on the phone call, you cannot ‘approve’ a song you haven’t heard.”

August 2016: West comments at the VMAs

West said he had called Swift and said he loved “all y’all.” Coverage characterized the remark as an attempted clarification, not as proof of a definitive reconciliation.

March 2020: a longer recording appears online

News reports described a roughly 25-minute recording that included material absent from the earlier Snapchat excerpts. Swift said the longer recording supported her account that she had not been told about the “bitch” lyric. Kardashian disputed Swift’s characterization of the dispute and said Swift had reignited it. The recording surfaced online; the available reporting does not establish a verified source or chain of custody for the leak.

How did the dispute appear in later music and interviews?

2017: Reputation and snake imagery

Swift released Reputation and “Look What You Made Me Do.” News timelines have connected the album’s snake imagery and some lyrics to the public dispute. Those connections are interpretations by coverage and listeners, not confirmed identifications of what each song or image was meant to reference.

2019: Swift looks back

In a Rolling Stone interview, Swift discussed the context around the call and the accumulated history behind her reaction. Later that year, in a public post about Scooter Braun’s purchase of her former label, she described the leaked excerpt and the “Famous” video.

December 2023: Swift describes the personal toll

In her TIME Person of the Year interview, Swift called the episode “a career death” and discussed its psychological impact. This was her retrospective account of the experience, not an independent finding about the recording. Us Weekly quoted Swift describing what she saw as “a fully manufactured frame job, in an illegally recorded phone call, which Kim Kardashian edited and then put out to say to everyone that I was a liar.” Those are Swift’s allegations and recollection; the quotation does not itself establish the recording’s legality or editing history.

April 2024: “thanK you aIMee”

“thanK you aIMee” appeared on The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology. Coverage interpreted the capitalized letters in the title and the song’s narrative as an apparent reference to Kardashian. Swift did not confirm that identification in the material cited here, so it remains an interpretation.

What the timeline does—and does not—establish

  • The public story starts with the 2009 VMAs interruption and includes a visible thaw in 2015 before the “Famous” dispute.
  • The 2016 call excerpts showed a discussion of a lyric, while Swift’s objection concerned the degrading wording and the finished song. Discussing a lyric and approving the released track are distinct claims.
  • The July 2016 Snapchat clips were excerpts; the longer recording appeared online in 2020 and prompted renewed public responses.
  • Claims about private motives and interpretations of later songs, titles, and imagery should be attributed rather than presented as confirmed fact.
  • The chronology covered here reaches the 2024 album chapter; it does not establish a complete account of what happened after that point.
