The photo that best captures Taylor Swift’s cats’ star power is the 2023 TIME Person of the Year portrait with Benjamin Button draped across her shoulders. It looks effortless; cats, as fans who tried to recreate the pose discovered, have their own ideas. Swift’s three cats—Benjamin, Olivia Benson and Meredith Grey—have each had memorable public moments, from a namesake meeting to the portraits that made them familiar to fans.
Benjamin Button’s shoulder-sitting TIME portrait
In TIME’s 2023 Person of the Year portrait, Benjamin Button rests across Swift’s shoulders, turning a formal cover image into an unusually cozy cat picture. The pose became a playful challenge for cat owners who tried to copy it with their own pets; as TIME noted, the recreations did not always go to plan. The appeal is in that contrast: Benjamin looks perfectly at home, while most cats are unlikely to treat a human shoulder as a photo set.
The portrait is the clearest centerpiece among Swift’s widely recognized cat photos, and an editorial image rather than a casual snapshot. It also makes Benjamin the cat many readers will recognize first.
Olivia Benson meets her namesake
One of Swift’s most charming cat encounters happened in 2015, when Olivia Benson the cat met Mariska Hargitay, who plays Olivia Benson on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Swift introduced the meeting with the line, “This is Olivia Benson meeting Olivia Benson.” TIME’s account of the meeting captures the joke neatly: the cat and the actor share a name, but only one was there to meet a fellow Olivia.

Meredith Grey, Olivia Benson and Benjamin Button
Swift’s three cats are Meredith Grey, Olivia Benson and Benjamin Button. TIME named all three in a 2019 profile, which also gives a glimpse of why cats have remained part of Swift’s public life. Asked about taking a role in the film Cats, she explained, “I have cats. I’m obsessed with them. I love my cats so much that when a role came up in a movie called Cats, I just thought, like, I gotta do this.”
She also described the qualities she admires in them: “They’re very dignified. They’re independent. They’re very capable of dealing with their own life.” That independence is a fitting backdrop to the pictures: even when a cat is in a carefully made portrait, the animal—not the camera—sets the terms.

Read Swift’s comments in TIME’s 2019 story about Swift and her cats. The three names are established there; breed descriptions repeated in some photo roundups are less firmly supported by the primary reporting cited here, so they are not necessary to identify the cats.

These moments work because each offers a different kind of glimpse: Benjamin’s composed TIME portrait, Olivia’s playful meeting with her namesake, and Swift’s own explanation of her affection for cats. Together they make the cats recognizable without turning them into accessories. The sweetest detail may be that Swift’s fondness for them is paired with a clear appreciation of their independence.
