The Life of a Showgirl, Taylor Swift’s 12th studio album, arrived October 3, 2025. Its launch was exceptionally large by figures reported by Universal Music, while early responses were divided. Those are separate stories: sales and streaming figures measure commercial activity, not whether listeners or critics approved of the album.
What is Taylor Swift’s 12th album called, and when did it come out?
The album is The Life of a Showgirl. The Associated Press reported its release date as October 3, 2025, and identified it as Swift’s 12th studio album. The record was produced by Swift, Max Martin and Shellback. Sabrina Carpenter appears on the closing title track, according to the Associated Press report.
What songs are on The Life of a Showgirl?
The AP-listed album has 12 tracks, in this order:
- “The Fate of Ophelia”
- “Elizabeth Taylor”
- “Opalite”
- “Father Figure”
- “Eldest Daughter”
- “Ruin the Friendship”
- “Actually Romantic”
- “Wi$h Li$t”
- “Wood”
- “Cancelled!”
- “Honey”
- “The Life of a Showgirl”
Why are people divided about The Life of a Showgirl?
Early reaction was polarized, but the available evidence does not establish a representative global opinion, a critic-wide consensus or the share of listeners who liked or disliked the album. A 2025 essay by Monique McDade in Cambridge University Press’s Public Humanities describes severe online criticism in the early response and interprets the album as a tonal shift toward a mid-20th-century story-world. McDade draws a comparison with Jacqueline Susann and her 1966 novel Valley of the Dolls. That is one scholar’s reading, not a poll or a definitive account of how all audiences received the record. Read the essay in Public Humanities.
How large was the album’s launch?
Universal Music Canada reported in an October 13, 2025 announcement that The Life of a Showgirl generated more than 4 million U.S. and 5.5 million global album-equivalent units in its first week, and debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. These are label-reported figures, not an independent audit. Album-equivalent units are a different measure from copies sold: the label’s announcement groups album consumption into a units figure, so it should not be described simply as 5.5 million albums sold. Universal Music Canada also reported more than 1 million vinyl units sold in the first week, calling it the largest vinyl sales week in Nielsen history at that time. Swift said in the same announcement: “I’ll never forget how excited I was in 2006 when my first album sold 40,000 copies in its first week.” See Universal Music Canada’s announcement.

- Taylor Swift's 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, will be released worldwide October 3, 2025
Universal Music Japan reported other launch figures, which describe different measures and should not be added to the Canadian label’s totals: 2.7 million U.S. physical-plus-digital sales on release day and more than 1.5 billion global streams in the launch period. The same company said the October 3–5 theatrical event The Official Release Party of a Showgirl grossed approximately $33 million in the U.S. and Canada over its three-day run. That is event revenue, not album sales. See Universal Music Japan’s release.
