Taylor Swift and Conor Kennedy were linked in a brief summer 2012 romance, but several details that made the story headline news remain disputed. Contemporary reports placed the relationship’s start in early July; later coverage centered on a wedding dispute, a nearby house purchase and an October breakup reported by unnamed sources. The wedding accounts conflict, and the purchase’s reported motive was never established.
When did Taylor Swift and Conor Kennedy date?
Boston.com reported in August 2012 that the relationship had been underway since early July. It described Swift as 22 and Kennedy as 18; CBS also reported Kennedy was 18. Those are contemporary press accounts, not a start date or ages confirmed by the couple. Boston.com’s report and CBS News’ coverage placed the pair around Hyannis Port, Massachusetts, where the Kennedy family had a compound.

Coverage also noted that Kennedy’s mother, Mary Richardson Kennedy, had died by suicide in May 2012. That fact is part of the period’s context, not evidence of any connection between her death and Swift or the relationship.
Did Taylor Swift crash a Kennedy family wedding?
There is no uncontested account establishing that Swift “crashed” the wedding. Reports published in August 2012 relayed sharply different accounts of whether she was invited and whether she was asked to leave.

Victoria Gifford Kennedy’s account
ABC News, reporting on an account Victoria Gifford Kennedy gave the Boston Herald, said Conor had not RSVP’d. Gifford Kennedy said she texted the couple asking them not to attend after they contacted her about an hour before the ceremony, and later asked Swift to leave the reception. She was quoted as saying: “I personally went up to Ms. Swift, whose entrance distracted the entire event, politely introduced myself to her, and asked her as nicely as I could to leave. It was like talking to a ghost. She seemed to look right past me.” This is her account, not an independently established finding.
Swift’s representative’s response
ABC also reported that Swift’s representative denied the claims, said Swift had been invited and said the bride thanked her for attending. Boston.com described the wedding story as reported gossip. The competing accounts do not support presenting the “wedding crash” version as settled fact. Read ABC News’ account.
Was the house purchase connected to Kennedy?
News reports linked Swift to a house near the Kennedy family’s Cape Cod homes, but they did not establish that she bought it to be near Conor. ABC News reported a $4.9 million purchase, citing People and a local real-estate agent, and described a 13-room property overlooking Nantucket Sound. The Boston Globe later described a $4.9 million, 4,440-square-foot house across from Ethel Kennedy’s home. Vanity Fair’s 2013 account said the sale was reported in November 2012 to Ocean Drive LLC for $4.8 million, drawing on Cape Cod Times reporting and a company filing associated with someone connected to Swift’s management. These are different publications’ reported figures, not a single definitive price.
In her 2013 Vanity Fair interview, Swift mocked the tabloid premise that buying a house near a boyfriend was a habit: “People say that about me, that I apparently buy houses near every boy I like—that’s a thing that I apparently do. If I like you I will apparently buy up the real-estate market just to freak you out so you leave me.” The same article relayed a source’s account that Swift and her parents had viewed the property for more than a year, after Rory Kennedy recommended it. Neither account proves her motive. Read the Vanity Fair interview.

When did they break up?
The Boston Globe and Los Angeles Times reported a breakup on October 25, 2012, citing unnamed sources close to Swift. The Globe quoted an unnamed friend saying, “They quietly parted ways a while ago,” and, “It was just a distance thing. No hard feelings. They’re fine.” The Los Angeles Times repeated the distance explanation through an unnamed Swift friend and said, citing Us Weekly, that the pair had not seen each other in over a month. Neither breakup report quoted Swift or Kennedy confirming the split. The Boston Globe and Los Angeles Times reported the story.
Was a Taylor Swift song about Conor Kennedy?
The coverage discussed Swift’s songwriting and the timing of the “Begin Again” video, which appeared the day breakup reports ran. That timing does not establish that the song—or any other named track—was about Kennedy. The reports in this account offer speculation, not confirmation from Swift.
Rank #4
In the same 2013 Vanity Fair interview, Swift criticized the way women who write about their feelings are portrayed as “clingy” or “desperate.” She was speaking about the broader treatment of women songwriters, not identifying a Kennedy-related song.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why did the relationship become a controversy story?
The relationship was brief, but coverage expanded it into a story about celebrity, wedding etiquette, property and the Kennedy family’s public mythology. The strongest distinctions are between what was reported and what was established: the romance and nearby property purchase appeared in contemporary coverage; the wedding accounts directly conflicted; the breakup reports depended on unnamed sources; and song connections remained speculation. Swift later objected to the way tabloid coverage turned women’s confessional songwriting into a caricature, a criticism relevant to how this romance was framed.
