What should someone do after possible bat contact?
The story does not change the general advice for a possible exposure. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s guidance, updated July 1, 2025, says: “If you do know that you were bitten or scratched by a bat, wash the wound with soap and water and get medical help right away.” If you think you may have had contact with a bat, the CDC advises talking with your health department. Bat bites can be tiny and may go unnoticed, so seek prompt, individualized advice from medical or public-health professionals.
The CDC says bats are the animals most often reported with rabies in the United States. That is a general statement, not a measure of the risk from the bat involved in this incident.
