Spoilers for the full first season of Task, including Episode 7, “A Still Small Voice.” Tom Brandis does not adopt Sam. He helps the boy move into a permanent home, then tells his imprisoned son Ethan that he forgives him and will be waiting when he is released. The crime story reaches a resolution; the family story ends with a difficult beginning.
What happens in the Task finale?
Season 1 ends with Episode 7, “A Still Small Voice.” The FBI task force is still tracking the leak, while Maeve faces danger from people looking for the money Robbie left behind. Tom and Aleah connect Anthony Grasso to the leak and use their authority to track him. Grasso’s commanding officer is sent to kill him, and a Dark Hearts member also attacks. Grasso survives the shootout wounded and warns Maeve that the gang is coming.
Jayson arrives at Maeve’s home after killing Perry. Tom and Aleah intervene. Maeve survives the confrontation and keeps the money Robbie intended for his family. With that immediate danger addressed, the episode turns to the choice at the heart of Tom’s story.
Does Tom adopt Sam?
No. Tom has grown attached to Sam while fostering him, but a permanent family becomes available. Tom lets Sam go to that home rather than adopting him himself. His daughters support the move.

The choice is not framed as Tom abandoning Sam. It gives Sam the stability Maeve and Robbie wanted for their children, while Tom faces the family rupture in his own home. Creator and showrunner Brad Ingelsby explained that he considered different outcomes, including letting Robbie live, but chose Robbie’s sacrifice because it would shape Tom’s decision to recommit to Ethan. Ingelsby said, “I felt really, really passionate that he couldn’t keep the kid.” In his view, Tom keeping Sam would have undercut the story’s central emotional work: making a home ready for his son.
What happens between Tom and Ethan?
At Ethan’s hearing, Tom publicly says he forgives his son and will be waiting for him at home after his release. The moment does not erase what happened or its consequences. It is Tom’s commitment to be there when Ethan comes back.

That promise is deliberately not a tidy reconciliation. Ingelsby called the conclusion hopeful, while acknowledging that Tom expects Ethan’s return to be hard. “I think it is a hopeful ending,” he said. Forgiveness is a decision and a beginning here—not proof that grief has passed or that rebuilding their relationship will be easy.
Why is the ending so emotional?
Ingelsby has described the series as a story about fathers, the damage they do to their children, and whether they can repair it. “This [show] is all about the fathers and being left behind, seeing the damage they’ve done to their kids, how they’re going to fix that in their lives — or not be able to fix it.” That focus makes Tom’s two choices—letting Sam find permanence and telling Ethan he is still wanted—part of the same emotional arc.

The finale separates what can be settled from what cannot. Maeve survives and keeps Robbie’s money, and the immediate criminal danger is confronted. Tom can offer Ethan forgiveness and a place to return, but he cannot promise that their family will be whole again. The show closes on his willingness to try.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the Task ending happy?
It is hopeful, not uncomplicatedly happy. Sam has a permanent home, and Tom reaches out to Ethan with forgiveness and a promise to wait for him. But Ethan’s return lies ahead, and Tom knows that repairing their relationship will take work. The season ends with a direction for the family, not a guarantee of closure.
