Mark Ruffalo plays the agent leading the investigation, Tom Brandis, while Tom Pelphrey plays Robbie Prendergast, a family man at the center of the case. Created by Brad Ingelsby, the series pairs the pursuit with the personal pressures facing its central characters.
Who are the main characters in Task?
The story’s central contrast is between the investigators trying to stop the robberies and the people drawn into them. HBO describes the task force as pursuing a series of violent robberies led by an unsuspecting family man. The series was announced as an HBO Original drama set in the working-class suburbs of Philadelphia, with a U.S. premiere date of September 7, 2025. HBO’s series announcement provides the official premise.
Tom Brandis — Mark Ruffalo
Ruffalo plays Tom Brandis, the FBI special agent leading the task force investigating the robberies. The crime investigation is only part of Tom’s story: creator and showrunner Brad Ingelsby told the Associated Press that he conceived Tom’s emotional journey around a crisis of faith and a search for redemption.
Robbie Prendergast — Tom Pelphrey
Pelphrey plays Robbie Prendergast, the family man associated with the robberies at the center of the investigation. That premise sets up the show’s core tension: the task force’s pursuit on one side, and the human and family stakes surrounding the suspected robberies on the other.

Who created Task, and what is its emotional focus?
Brad Ingelsby created the series and serves as its showrunner. In an interview with Andrew Dalton of the Associated Press, Ingelsby described building the drama around Tom’s emotional journey before shaping the crime plot: “I think that stuff was some of the earliest we wrote. It was like, ‘OK, now, so that’s the emotional journey of the show and then we’ve got to figure out what the plot is.’” Read the Associated Press interview.

What is known about Task season 2?

Ingelsby said the renewal surprised him because he had regarded the first season’s story as having a clear ending. The report does not establish a release date or a complete season-two cast, so those details should not be assumed from the season-one premiere credits.
