The retailer frames the assortment around honoring loved ones, but the observance is more than a seasonal design theme: it is a remembrance tradition rooted in family and community practices. Here’s what Target lists, how its Latino-owned brand badge works, and how to read the merchandise in cultural context.
What is in Target’s Día de Muertos collection?
Target’s Día de Muertos shop organizes its current selection into decor and tabletop, arts and crafts, and collectibles. Examples include a Mini Wood Ofrenda Set, a 36-by-48-inch table cover, a wooden ofrenda painting activity kit, faux marigold garland, and figurines. Listings and availability can change over time.
Target describes the assortment this way: “Honor your loved ones with pieces that celebrate family, tradition & memories.” Its shop also encourages customers to look for an icon in product details to identify and support Latino-owned brands. That is a product-level discovery signal; it does not mean that every item in the collection is Latino-owned.
Product examples have specific editions
One example is Target’s 2025 Barbie Signature Día De Muertos doll. Target’s listing describes a cream gown with cempasúchil (marigold) detailing, a calavera face design, a doll stand, and a Certificate of Authenticity. The product description says its marigold motifs draw on flowers traditionally used to adorn altars and graves.

What is an ofrenda, and what goes on a Día de Muertos altar?
An ofrenda is part of the observance’s practice of remembering and honoring deceased loved ones; it is not simply a decorative display. UNESCO describes Indigenous communities’ Día de Muertos observance as commemorating the temporary return to Earth of deceased relatives and loved ones. Its account describes festivities from late October to early November, including families laying flower petals, candles, and offerings along the path between cemetery and home.

Those are practices UNESCO describes for Indigenous communities, not a universal checklist for every family. The AP has also reported on home ofrendas and cemetery visits as customary ways families honor loved ones. What a family includes or how it observes can vary; buying a particular product is not a requirement for participating in the tradition.
Is Día de Muertos the same as Halloween?
No. The sources describe Día de Muertos as a remembrance observance centered on deceased loved ones and family practices. Halloween is not an equivalent framing, and reducing Día de Muertos to skulls, skeletons, or a generic spooky theme misses its emphasis on memory and relationships with the dead.

What does the collection’s cultural framing leave unanswered?
Target’s wording emphasizes family, tradition, and memories, and its Latino-owned icon helps shoppers identify brands marked as Latino-owned in individual product details. That does not establish who designed or advised the full assortment. Target’s 2023 Latino Heritage Month fact sheet discusses a separate assortment made with Latino artists and creators and year-round Latino-owned brand discovery; it does not identify the designers or cultural advisers for this Día de Muertos shop.
Commercialization is also debated within the communities connected to the observance. In AP reporting, Sehila Mota Casper, director of Latinos in Heritage Conservation, warns that “It’s beginning to get culturally appropriated by other individuals outside of our diaspora.” Cesáreo Moreno, chief curator and visual director of the National Museum of Mexican Art, describes Día de Muertos as a cultural expression with a role in grieving, while also discussing how popular culture has broadened awareness. Salvador Ordorica, a first-generation Mexican American quoted by AP, says traditions can change while their core remains. These are distinct, attributed perspectives—not a single position held by everyone.

For a shopper, the distinction is useful: retail items can evoke aspects of the observance, but a product listing cannot by itself explain a family’s practices or demonstrate the cultural knowledge behind a design. Consider the item’s stated purpose and product details, and treat the Latino-owned badge as applying to the brand identified on that listing rather than as proof about the entire assortment.
