“Abandoned perfection in favour of inspiration” is Bryget Chrisfield’s interpretation of Tame Impala’s fifth album, Deadbeat—not a statement Kevin Parker made about his own process. In her October 17, 2025, Rolling Stone Australia review, Chrisfield hears an album that makes room for both club-ready techno and sparse, minimal songs, with looser structures and more personal lyrics.
What does “abandoned perfection” mean here?
Chrisfield’s headline frames Deadbeat as a shift in creative approach: rather than pursuing tightly polished perfection, Parker seems, in her reading, to follow musical ideas and see where they lead. That is criticism, not a documented declaration by Parker. Her closing sentence makes the distinction clear: “For Deadbeat, Parker seems to have abandoned his quest for perfection in favour of pulling on threads of inspiration, then rolling about and luxuriating in whatever unravels.”
The wording points to the character Chrisfield hears in the finished album. She describes loose song structures and space between beats as part of what allows its lyrics to feel more personal. It is an interpretation of the music, not proof of a change in Parker’s working methods.
How does Deadbeat sound?
Chrisfield hears two complementary sides: club-friendly techno and sparser, more minimal creations. Rather than presenting the album as a sequence of sharply contrasting emotional states, she finds its tone more consistent than that of earlier Tame Impala records. These are the review’s critical comparisons; it does not offer a track-by-track ranking or an objective measure of how the album differs from each predecessor.

A gradual build in “My Old Ways”
The opening track, “My Old Ways,” begins wistfully at the piano, then gathers instrumental detail. That accumulation offers one example of the album’s less rigid feel: the arrangement develops by adding to its initial mood rather than relying only on a sharply defined shift.
“Not My World” as the centrepiece
Chrisfield identifies “Not My World,” the sixth track, as the album’s centrepiece. The placement matters to her account of Deadbeat: it is not just a collection of individual singles, but an album whose sequencing gives this track a central role.

Singles and other tracks in the review
The review discusses “End Of Summer,” “Loser,” and “Dracula” among the singles, and also names “Piece Of Heaven,” “No Reply,” “Obsolete,” and “Ethereal Connection.” Chrisfield’s broader point is about how the album balances dance-oriented production with more open, restrained passages, rather than ranking these songs against one another.
What changes in the lyrics and songwriting?
In Chrisfield’s reading, the looseness of the structures and the gaps between beats leave room for more personal lyrics. Parker wrote the tracks; Sarah Aarons is credited as a co-writer on “Dracula,” “Oblivion,” and “Afterthought.” The review treats that writing and the album’s sonic space as connected parts of its character, without claiming that every song follows the same formula.

What the review does—and does not—claim
- It is a review, not an interview. The perfection-versus-inspiration thesis belongs to Chrisfield’s critical framing.
