Takopi’s Original Sin is a compact, six-episode anime adaptation of Taizan5’s completed manga, released by Crunchyroll in 2025. Calling it a “sleeper hit” is best understood as a reception argument, not a claim about proven streaming numbers: official sources point to awards, social-media attention and strong interest in the manga, but do not publish anime viewership totals.
What is Takopi’s Original Sin about?
The story follows Takopi, an alien who arrives on Earth and tries to help Shizuka, a depressed fourth grader, using technology that can turn back time. His well-meant interventions lead to increasingly grim consequences. VIZ’s official description warns of “mayhem and death,” and its tagline captures the story’s tension: “Time travel can’t heal all wounds.” VIZ’s manga page
The anime was produced with ENISHIYA, according to Tokyo Broadcasting System Television (TBS). It adapts Taizan5’s manga, which ran on Shonen Jump+ from December 2021 to March 2022 and is complete in two collected volumes. TBS’s official Takopi page
Why is it called a sleeper hit?
The case rests on recognition and signs of audience conversation, rather than disclosed streaming performance. TBS describes the series as a major 2025 title and says new episodes repeatedly trended on social media. TBS also reports that it won the anime grand prize at the Filmarks Awards 2025. In June 2026, TBS reported that the series received the TV Series Jury Award at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival; Crunchyroll’s series page labels it a 2026 Anime Awards nominee. TBS’s current official page says the two volumes had passed 1.8 million copies in circulation, including digital editions. Neither number measures anime streams, viewers or completion rates. So “sleeper hit” fits as a description of a short series that drew visible attention and awards recognition, while carrying the momentum of a widely read source manga. It is not an independently verified ranking of 2025 anime, and the available official sources do not establish how many people watched it.

Should you watch the anime or read the manga?
The choice is between a six-episode adaptation and a complete two-volume manga. The anime is the more compact option; the manga is the original format and lets you read the story at your own pace.
