In a December 5, 2025, interview with PEOPLE, she described why she had chosen to speak after initially avoiding public comment. She did not say she had intended to promote racial or eugenic ideas.
What Sydney Sweeney said about the backlash
In PEOPLE’s December 5, 2025 exclusive, Sweeney said she had done the campaign because she liked the jeans and the brand. “I was honestly surprised by the reaction,” she said, adding: “I don’t support the views some people chose to connect to the campaign. Many have assigned motives and labels to me that just aren’t true.”
She also explained why she was addressing the controversy: “In the past my stance has been to never respond to negative or positive press but recently I have come to realize that my silence regarding this issue has only widened the divide, not closed it.” She said she hoped the new year would bring more focus on what connects people rather than what divides them.
Her remarks reject views attributed to the campaign and express regret about remaining silent. They are not an admission that she intentionally promoted eugenics or a direct apology for doing the advertisement.

How her December remarks differed from her earlier comments
Sweeney had discussed the response in a GQ interview published November 4, 2025. Then, she called the reaction a surprise and said she had not followed much of the debate while filming Euphoria. She described putting her phone away during long workdays and said she believed she was doing a jeans ad. Asked about the president and vice president discussing it, she called that “surreal.”
The distinction is in what she addressed: in November she spoke about surprise and limited attention to the controversy; in December she reflected on the effect she believed her silence had had. PEOPLE’s account does not establish that she changed her account of the campaign’s intent.
Why the American Eagle campaign drew criticism
The campaign’s slogan, “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans,” plays on the similar sound of “jeans” and “genes.” An ABC News explainer described campaign videos that played on both words, including language about traits passed from parents to children and the line, “My jeans are blue.” Critics read the genetic wording alongside Sweeney’s appearance as carrying racial-hierarchy or eugenic undertones.

The interpretation was contested. The Associated Press described debate about race and Western beauty standards as well as responses that said critics were reading too much into the ad. AP also distinguished a widely discussed teaser posted on American Eagle’s social accounts from the campaign itself; it was not part of the campaign. The available reporting documents competing readings, not the creators’ private intent.

On August 1, 2025, American Eagle responded on Instagram: “‘Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans’ is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story.” The statement added that the company would continue to celebrate people wearing its jeans with confidence and that “Great jeans look good on everyone.” PEOPLE reproduced the statement, and Axios also reported on the brand’s response.
The company’s explanation is its stated position; it does not settle why critics found the language troubling. Likewise, criticism of the wording does not by itself establish the people behind the campaign’s intent.

What polling and company figures show—and what they do not
A YouGov survey of 1,128 U.S. adult citizens, conducted August 7–11, 2025, asked whether the campaign’s wordplay was appropriate or inappropriate. Fifty-nine percent called it appropriate, 17% inappropriate and 24% were unsure. These are responses from that sample during that field period, not a permanent measure of public opinion.
Separate business figures should also be kept in context. ABC reported that American Eagle CMO Craig Brommers called new-customer acquisition “unprecedented” during a post-earnings call. The company attributed more than 700,000 additional customer counts and 40 billion impressions to campaigns featuring Sweeney and Travis Kelce’s Tru Kolors. Those are company-reported results for campaigns involving both partnerships, not independent estimates of the effect of Sweeney’s ad or the controversy.
PEOPLE, citing a brand press email, reported that the campaign’s Sydney Jacket sold out in one day and its custom Sydney Jean in a week. Those are historical sellout claims, not information about current stock.
