Who stars in The Housemaid?
Sydney Sweeney plays Millie, and Amanda Seyfried plays Nina Winchester. The official credits also name Brandon Sklenar, Michele Morrone, and Elizabeth Perkins. What is the movie about?
Millie is trying to escape her past when she accepts a live-in housemaid position with Nina and Andrew Winchester. Their home appears to offer the fresh start she needs, but the official synopsis frames the job as a dangerous one, shaped by secrets, scandal, and unequal power. This spoiler-light premise avoids revealing later plot turns.
Is The Housemaid based on a book?
Yes. The film adapts Freida McFadden’s novel The Housemaid. The book and movie are different formats with different creative leads: McFadden wrote the novel, while Feig directed the film and Sonnenshine adapted the story for its screenplay. The available official sources establish the adaptation, but do not provide a scene-by-scene comparison, so they do not support a claim about how closely the film follows the book.

If you want the source story in its original form, read McFadden’s novel; if you prefer a screen adaptation, watch the film. Reading first may reveal story developments before you see them on screen.
