Sydney Sweeney addressed the American Eagle “Great Jeans” controversy in two stages: in a November 2025 GQ interview, she said the reaction surprised her; in a December 2025 interview with People, she said she opposed hate and divisiveness and had come to believe her silence had widened the divide. The campaign promoted denim, but its “jeans”/“genes” wordplay prompted sharply different interpretations.
What Sydney Sweeney said
Her comments developed between two interviews, rather than arriving as a single response. Variety reported her November 5, 2025, comments to GQ; Rolling Stone and Variety later reported her December 7 interview with People.
November: surprise at the reaction
In the GQ interview, Sweeney said the response to the campaign had surprised her. She said she loved jeans and had not felt affected by the controversy, adding, “I’ve always believed that I’m not here to tell people what to think.”
December: a clearer statement on the divide
In her People interview, Sweeney said she had not supported the views some people attached to the campaign: “I did it because I love the jeans and love the brand. I don’t support the views some people chose to connect to the campaign. Many have assigned motives and labels to me that just aren’t true.”

She also said, “Anyone who knows me knows that I’m always trying to bring people together. I’m against hate and divisiveness.” Reflecting on her earlier approach to publicity, she added that she had usually avoided responding to press, but had come to realize “that my silence regarding this issue has only widened the divide, not closed it.”
Why the American Eagle campaign became controversial
American Eagle’s promotion was titled “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans.” The phrase is a denim pun, but spoken aloud, “jeans” can sound like “genes.” A teaser video used the word “genes” before the punchline “My jeans are blue.” The Associated Press noted that the teaser appeared on the brand’s social channels but was not part of the ad campaign itself. The AP’s contemporaneous account describes the campaign and the company’s response.

Some critics connected the wordplay and the ad’s presentation of Sweeney to eugenics, white supremacy, or narrow Western beauty standards. Other viewers defended the promotion or argued that critics read too much into an ordinary jeans campaign. Those were competing public interpretations; the available reporting does not establish that American Eagle intended a eugenics or supremacist message.

On August 1, 2025, American Eagle said the campaign “is and always was about the jeans,” and said it would celebrate how everyone wears AE jeans. That statement addressed the company’s stated focus; it did not make the differing audience interpretations disappear.

What the attention figures do—and do not—show
Axios reported media-monitoring figures supplied by Memo and Signal AI. Memo estimated roughly 3,000 news articles and more than 50 million readers, including about 29 million readers from left-leaning outlets. Signal AI reported that American Eagle mentions rose 18 times and its sentiment measure moved from +50 to -31. These are attributed estimates and vendor-defined monitoring measures, not a poll of public opinion or a measure of denim sales. Axios’s coverage also cautioned against treating the attention as evidence of high jeans sales. The available figures do not establish that the controversy caused sales to rise or fall.
