Sycho Sid and Shawn Michaels traded the WWE Championship in a compact 1996–97 rivalry: Sid took the title at Survivor Series 1996, then Michaels won it back at the Royal Rumble in January 1997. The story’s defining turn came when Michaels paused to check on his trainer, Jose Lothario, giving Sid an opening to use a ringside camera and finish the match with a powerbomb.
What happened between Sycho Sid and Shawn Michaels?
The rivalry was built around two championship matches and a personal history: before facing Michaels for the title, Sid had been his bodyguard. At Survivor Series, Michaels’s former trainer, Jose Lothario, was in his corner. Sid won the championship after an incident at ringside changed the course of the match.
1. Sid had been Michaels’s bodyguard
Their championship feud did not begin as a clash between strangers. WWE’s account identifies Sid as Michaels’s former bodyguard, giving the title match a personal setup beyond the championship itself. WWE’s Survivor Series 1996 recap
2. Jose Lothario was in Michaels’s corner
Michaels was accompanied by Lothario, his former trainer. His presence became central to the finish rather than remaining a background detail.

5. The pause gave Sid the opening to win
Sid struck Michaels with the camera, then hit a powerbomb to secure the pin after the referee had been knocked out. The ringside incident and Michaels’s choice to check on Lothario were crucial to the title change; WWE’s recap does not provide further referee or timing details.
Why did Sid beat Shawn Michaels at Survivor Series 1996?
Sid’s victory followed a sequence of distraction and opportunism: Michaels stopped to check on Lothario after Sid had attacked him with the camera, and Sid used the opening to hit Michaels with it. With the referee knocked out, Sid followed with a powerbomb and won the championship. WWE lists the event on Sunday, November 17, 1996, and records Sid as the winner and new WWE Champion. How the two title matches compare
| Event and date | Championship outcome | Finish detail established by WWE |
|---|---|---|
| Survivor Series — November 17, 1996 | Sid defeated Michaels to become WWE Champion. | After striking Michaels with a television camera, Sid won with a powerbomb while the referee was knocked out. |
| Royal Rumble — January 19, 1997 | Michaels defeated Sid to win his second WWE Championship. | The official event record confirms the result; the cited record does not state the finish mechanism. |
What the surviving official record does—and does not—establish
WWE’s event archive supports the central sequence: Sid’s prior role as Michaels’s bodyguard, Lothario’s involvement, the camera incident, Sid’s powerbomb victory, and Michaels’s title win at the next Royal Rumble. WWE also maintains an official video listing for the Survivor Series match; the listing alone does not establish that the video is currently available on any particular service.
