When a Switchboard Live YouTube stream is stuck on “Starting,” first find out where the feed stops: between your encoder and Switchboard, or between Switchboard and YouTube. Check for incoming video in Switchboard’s Confidence Monitor, then use the destination status and YouTube Live Control Room’s Health Indicator and timestamped errors to choose the next fix. There is no single confirmed cause for every stream that stays on “Starting.”
1. Check whether Switchboard is receiving video
-
Open the relevant Switchboard workflow and compare its Stream URL and Stream Key with the server URL and key configured in your encoder. If necessary, reveal the key in Switchboard to compare it accurately. A mismatched URL or key can prevent the encoder feed from reaching the workflow. See Switchboard’s initial setup guide.
-
Start or send a test feed from the encoder. Look for incoming video in the workflow’s Confidence Monitor. Switchboard says a successful test changes the status from “Not Receiving” to “Receiving.” The monitor previews video arriving from the encoder; a no-source state means Switchboard is not currently receiving that feed. The workflow’s stream-health display can also show incoming bitrate and FPS after the encoder connects. See Switchboard’s workflow page overview.
-
If video is absent or the status remains “Not Receiving,” troubleshoot the encoder-to-Switchboard connection before changing YouTube destination settings. Switchboard’s test checks that link only; it does not start the stream on a destination. Start the YouTube destination after video is present and the workflow shows “Receiving.”

2. Check the encoder’s output and settings
If the workflow is not receiving video, confirm that the encoder is running, sending output to the correct Switchboard URL and using the matching key. Then check whether the encoder reports an error or is overloaded.

Switchboard recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe rate, and 30 or 60 FPS in its initial setup guidance. Treat these as its recommended settings, not proof that a different setting is the cause of your particular start delay.
-
YouTube advises using the latest version of your encoder. Check the encoder’s output preview and error messages, its CPU load, and a local recording if you have one. If the local output looks healthy, test outbound internet connectivity; YouTube advises contacting your internet service provider if that test identifies a connection problem. See YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance.

3. If Switchboard receives video, inspect the YouTube destination
When the Confidence Monitor shows video and the workflow is receiving, the encoder-to-Switchboard link is working. Check the YouTube destination’s status, then open YouTube Live Control Room and inspect the Health Indicator. YouTube’s live dashboard and Live Control Room show timestamped error messages. Use the displayed error and time to identify the issue rather than resetting settings at random.

Red errors: YouTube describes these as critical. They may prevent an event from starting or cause problems for viewers.

4. Refresh the stream key if YouTube reports an encoder-start error
If YouTube reports an error starting a stream from a third-party encoder, its guidance is to get a new stream key in Live Control Room and update the encoder with it. If your streaming software signs in to YouTube without using a stream key, YouTube says to contact that software’s support team; it may need an update. See YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance.
5. Check the title only if YouTube schedules the stream instead
A stream that YouTube schedules rather than starts immediately is a different symptom from a feed that remains stuck on “Starting.” Switchboard’s FAQ identifies a missing stream title in the active template as one possible explanation for the scheduling behavior. In that case, stop the stream and update the YouTube title field in the template. This is a targeted check for scheduled streams, not a general fix for every starting delay. See Switchboard’s FAQ.
Choose the next check by where the feed stops
| What you see | Likely stage to investigate | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| No video in the Confidence Monitor; workflow says “Not Receiving” | Encoder to Switchboard | Compare the workflow Stream URL and Stream Key with the encoder; check that the encoder is sending output and look for encoder or connection errors. |
| Video appears in the monitor; workflow says “Receiving,” but YouTube is not live | Switchboard destination to YouTube | Check the destination status and read the timestamped Health Indicator error in Live Control Room. |
| YouTube schedules the stream instead of going live | YouTube title or active template | Check whether the active template has a YouTube stream title; update it if missing. |
The status indicators and the exact error text are more useful than guessing at a universal cause. The cited support guidance does not establish one encoder or one setting as the fix for every case.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want to keep a YouTube channel live 24/7 with uploaded videos rather than a camera feed, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home internet connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. To try it, start your free day with StreamNeo.
