Sweetpea turns the familiar sting of being underestimated into a darkly comic murder story. Ella Purnell gives its overlooked protagonist, Rhiannon Lewis, enough vulnerability to draw us close—and enough vanity and violence to make that closeness uneasy. The result is a sharp, sometimes queasy thriller about the stories people tell themselves when they decide they have been wronged.
What is Sweetpea about?
Rhiannon Lewis is an aspiring journalist who feels invisible at work and in her own life. After her father dies and a former school bully returns, resentment she has kept under control begins to turn into murder. The six-episode series is less a conventional police procedural than a coming-of-rage story: it follows Rhiannon’s shift from feeling powerless to claiming a frightening kind of agency.
That premise gives the show an uncomfortable invitation. Many viewers will recognize the small humiliations that Rhiannon catalogs; the series then asks what happens when she treats those grievances as permission to decide who deserves to suffer. Its black comedy makes that escalation entertaining without making it morally simple.
Does Ella Purnell carry the series?
Yes. Purnell, who also serves as an executive producer, gives Rhiannon a shifting presence: guarded and awkward in one moment, startlingly forceful in the next. The performance makes her need to be noticed feel real, while letting her self-importance and cruelty remain visible. She is not simply a misunderstood underdog, and Purnell’s control of that contradiction is the show’s central strength.

In a Sky interview, Purnell said, “Rhiannon doesn’t have to be likeable; she’s a serial killer. I’m not interested in her being likeable; I’m interested in her being relatable.” That distinction is the series’ most useful guide. Rhiannon’s feelings can be legible without making her choices defensible.
Does the comedy make the violence work?
The dry humor gives Sweetpea its particular bite. Rhiannon’s private logic can be absurd, and the show finds comedy in the distance between her self-image and what she is doing. That laughter is part of the unease: a joke can make a revenge fantasy feel satisfyingly neat just before the consequences make it harder to enjoy.

At its best, the humor exposes how Rhiannon edits reality to suit herself. She draws her own line between people who deserve harm and people who do not, but the series keeps that moral sorting under pressure. The tension is productive, though the premise’s mischievous pleasures can occasionally make the murders feel easier to savor than the show’s moral questions would suggest.
Is Sweetpea based on a book?
Yes. It is based on C.J. Skuse’s novel, but it is not a close, scene-by-scene adaptation. Sky says the television story differs considerably, including an expanded cast of characters and a changed backstory for Rhiannon. Purnell has described reading the novel and script knowing they would be “two very different things,” and calls the series an origin story focused on the emotional forces behind the murders.

That approach makes the show easier to take on its own terms: it is interested in how Rhiannon becomes who she is, rather than simply reproducing the book. If you want to compare the two, Skuse’s novel is the source text, not a TV tie-in designed to match every change.
How does the six-episode season fare?
STARZ lists season one as six episodes. The compact format suits a story built around one person’s transformation, and it keeps the focus on Rhiannon rather than turning the series into an expansive crime-world procedural. The trade-off is that the emotional and moral shifts can feel compressed; the show’s most compelling work is in Purnell’s performance and the mounting friction between grievance and consequence, not in a leisurely study of every supporting character.

Is Sweetpea worth watching?
For viewers who like dark comedy with a thriller’s forward pull, yes—especially if the appeal is a complicated lead rather than a conventional heroine. Purnell makes Rhiannon compelling without asking the audience to excuse her, and the show’s humor keeps its revenge premise lively while complicating the pleasure it offers. If you need a clear moral distance from a murderous protagonist, or want the novel reproduced closely, this is less likely to satisfy.
